Balk can be explored through several themes: its historic townscape, St. Ludgerus Church, the Luts and named routes. If you are looking for a hotel in Balk, you can start planning your trip by weighing up whether local history, connections to the water or a particular route is your main priority. This helps you consider the town’s options according to your interests, rather than treating different activities as a single offering.

Townscape, architecture and history

The historic centre of Balk features monumental buildings and picturesque canals. The town of Balk is designated as a protected townscape. Its architectural history includes St. Ludgerus Church: it was built in 1882–1883 as a three-aisled Neo-Gothic basilica, based on a design by A. Tepe. Its architectural style is inspired by Lower Rhine Gothic. The term “three-aisled” describes the division of the church interior into three longitudinal aisles. The church is of cultural-historical and architectural-historical significance.

Balk’s trading history also offers a distinct point of reference: in the 18th century, the town was known for its butter trade. This means several historical themes coexist in the town—architecture and townscape as well as trade. The Gondelvaart traditionally takes place on the Luts on the last Thursday in August. Check the event date for the relevant year before planning your trip around it.

The Luts and activities on the water

The Luts flows through Balk, rises from the Slotermeer and ends in the Heegermeer. It is also part of the Elfstedentocht. Balk has watersports rental providers, including boat tours on the Luts. Check availability and seasonal operations before your trip.

Another option on the water is the sailing ferry service operated by the Skûtsje “Aleida Hendrika”. From May to September, the vessel serves the route between Heeg and Balk, as well as the return journey between Balk and Heeg. For specific planning, check the current sailing days, as the service operates seasonally. A boat tour on the Luts and the sailing ferry are different offerings: the former is mentioned as an example of watersports rental, while the latter operates a specifically named route between two towns.

Compare routes and distances

The “Rondje Balk – Heeg” is 29.3 kilometres long and combines cycling with Skûtsjesilen. The ferry section is seasonal and must be reserved. Therefore, include both the ferry service and its seasonal sailing days in your plans. The route’s length and combination of cycling and sailing give it a different profile from a route described solely by its total distance.

The 171-kilometre Elfdorpenroute starts and ends in Balk. Compared with the 29.3-kilometre “Rondje Balk – Heeg”, its stated distance is significantly different; the Rondje is also described as combining cycling and sailing.

A self-guided audio tour

The “Balk Boterdorp” audio tour is another activity you can do independently. It is available free of charge through the izi.TRAVEL app. Unlike the routes mentioned above, neither a route length nor a ferry service is central to this tour: it is a separate way to discover Balk. Alongside the townscape, architecture, and water- and route-related activities, it provides another specific point of reference when deciding which themes you want to shape your stay.
