Kollum: Culture, History and Hotels
Accommodation in Kollum
Kollum combines a historic village character with named cultural attractions, routes and a seasonal boat tour. When choosing a hotel in Kollum, you can first decide what you would like to focus on during your stay: individual buildings and local history, a walk taking in listed sites, or a trip on the water. Routes through the wider landscape can also be part of your plans.
Church, museum and protected village character
The Maartenskerk, Kollum’s oldest church, stands in the village centre. The present church dates from the mid-15th century and has a Gothic appearance; it has been protected as a Rijksmonument since 10 September 1968. This allows the church to be understood both through its architectural history and its later protected status.
The Kollumer Museum “Mr. Andreae” is also housed in a former Werkhuis, which is a Rijksmonument. A large part of the permanent exhibition covers the Kollumer Oproer of 1797, the Orangists’ uprising against the Patriots. The museum therefore offers a clearly defined way to explore an event in local history, while the Maartenskerk brings architectural history and heritage protection to life.
Voorstraat and the Wallen have been designated a protected village landscape since 1979. This protection applies to two named areas of the village, not just to a single building. The “Ontdek Monumentaal Kollum” village walk passes twelve listed sites. If you would like to explore several monuments on one walk, this offers a different perspective from visiting only the church or museum.
Walks and landscape
One specific route through Kollum is the Streekpad Noardlike Fryske Wâlden. From the Tourist Transfer Point in Kollum, you can reach the Noardlike Fryske Wâlden National Landscape. This wider landscape has a dense network of roads and paths. Tree-lined banks and alder hedges offer walkers and cyclists shelter and variety, setting this landscape experience apart from the village’s heritage sites. You can therefore focus your stay either on individual historic destinations or on routes and landscape features.
Seasonal boat tour
The Kollum boat tour lasts about an hour and takes place on a whisper-quiet electric boat. In June, July and August, the Wilhelmina sightseeing boat travels around and through Kollum. A guide explains Kollum’s history and the Kollumer Oproer of 1797. The approximate duration gives you a clear timeframe, while the trip combines views from the water with historical commentary. As the tour is available only from June to August, check the specific departure dates before making plans. The Kollumer Oproer features in two formats: a large part of the permanent exhibition and the commentary on the seasonal boat tour.
