Stiens: Mills, Church and Culture
Accommodation in Stiens
In Stiens, mill history, religious architecture and leisure activities come together. The Kleine Molen, with its design and pump, points to the former Binnema polder; the Sint Vituskerk brings together construction periods, a vault and an organ from different centuries. This profile is complemented by a film season, swimming facilities and practical visitor information for the Molen de Hoop.
Mills in Stiens
The Kleine Molen in Stiens is a Frisian polder mill, also called the Monniksmolen or “Muonts.” Its pump raises water and pumps it into the former Binnema polder. The name identifies the type of mill, while the pump shows its water-management function in relation to the polder.
The Molen de Hoop is open every Saturday from 09:00 to 13:00. The volunteer millers offer tours and answer visitors’ questions. If you are planning a tour, make arrangements in advance.
Sint Vituskerk and the route along the coastline
The Sint Vituskerk in Stiens was built around 1100. Inside, it has a distinctive 16th-century barrel vault with a raised central section and a unique form; a Van Dam organ dates from 1830. A barrel vault is a vaulted ceiling with an elongated, arched shape. The three dates refer to different elements: the church building, the vault and the organ. This clearly distinguishes the construction date of the building from later features of its interior.
The 15.2 km route “Stiens – Feinsum – Koarnjum | Rondjes om de kerken” passes the churches of Stiens, Feinsum, Britsum and Koarnjum. These were built on ancient dwelling mounds in the former Frisian Middelzee; the route follows the old coastline. Unlike a focus on individual architectural features of the Sint Vituskerk, the route draws attention to several churches and their connection with the former coastal landscape.
Film, art and swimming
During the film season, Filmhuis Nije Skalm Stiens screens a film every two weeks on varying evenings; the season runs from late September to early April. The screening frequency and season dates are two separate points to consider when planning. Check the specific screening date in advance, as individual film dates may change.
A 2026 report describes the 15th edition of the public Trimdiel Keunstrûte. At this edition, several artists showed works in painting, photography, jewelry and poetry in Stiens and several surrounding villages, on a Saturday and Sunday from 13:00 to 17:00.
It Gryn swimming pool has indoor and outdoor pools and offers swimming facilities. Opening hours and seasonal availability may change; check them before planning a visit to swim. Doniastate children’s farm covers 6 hectares.
The activities have different schedules to consider: the film season has screenings on varying evenings, the Molen de Hoop has set Saturday hours, and the swimming pool’s seasonal availability may change.
