Bantega offers several distinct points of reference for planning a trip: a history connected with peat extraction and land reclamation, cycling routes, and recurring events. This lets you decide how to approach the village, depending on whether you are more interested in landscape history, activities, or a particular event date.

Landscape and History

Bantega’s historic surroundings consisted of sandy elevations formed by the sea, as well as peatlands and marshes. The “old land” lies around the village: drained areas were created after peat extraction. Water, pastures, rows of trees, reed beds, and villages are part of this varied landscape. Peat extraction connects local and landscape history, as Bantega is a regional village that came into being and developed through it. To get a sense of the area, it is therefore worth looking at both aspects: the historical description of the sandy elevations, peatlands, and marshes, and the landscape of the drained areas.

Around 1859, the area around Bantega was enclosed by a dike, marking the beginning of the Echtenpolder. This is a separate historical reference point from the village’s development through peat extraction: the dike marks the beginning of the polder, while peat extraction shaped the origins and development of the regional village. An archaeological find indicates that between 8000 and 4000 BCE, three hunters had a camp at the site of present-day Bantega. These milestones therefore span a prehistoric camp at the present-day site, the history of the village, and the creation of the polder around 1859.

Cycling Routes and Activities

There are two distinct points of reference for cycling. The Rondje Bantega route is 38 km long. The “Cycling between Tsjonger and Tsjûkemar” route also passes through Bantega. The routes can be distinguished by the information provided: Rondje Bantega has a specific distance, while the second route is linked to the village by its passage through Bantega. Route details may change, so it is a good idea to check the latest information before setting off.

IJsclub De Polder in Bantega also organizes inline skating and mountain biking tours throughout the year. These add two more types of activity to the cycling routes. If a club tour on a particular day is a deciding factor, match your plans to your preferred travel dates.

Natural Area and Events

The Ychtenerfeanpolder lies near Bantega. There are no walking paths there; the scattered plots of reedland are generally viewed from the road. If you plan to include this natural area in your trip, bear in mind that the plots can mainly be seen from the road.

Autocross Bantega takes place every year on the last Saturday of the Dutch construction workers’ holiday period. The exact calendar date changes each year, so if you are planning your trip around it, check the date for the relevant year. For several years now, a performance of the Iepenloftspul has also taken place in Bantega every three years. The events follow distinctly different schedules: Autocross takes place annually during the construction workers’ holiday period, while Iepenloftspul is held every three years. You can take these two recurring events into account separately when choosing your travel dates.
