When travelling to Follega, you can focus on remembrance, building history or weather-dependent activities. The Lancaster Memorial and the Follegasloot’s former significance provide historical points of reference; at IJsbaan Follega, ice skating and sledging depend on whether the ice is safe. When planning your travel dates, keep these different conditions in mind.

Remembrance and Local History

The Lancaster Memorial in Follega commemorates the crash of an AVRO Lancaster on 16 December 1943. It is a memorial stone with a mounted plaque and stands on a concrete slab. The memorial is in a field opposite Straatweg 33. The date of the event and the type of aircraft anchor the remembrance in a specific historical moment; the structural details also describe the memorial’s form.

De Drie Kogels was formerly a village inn and is now used as a farm. Its name refers to skirmishes fought by a citizens’ militia near Follega in 1799. The history of the name connects the building with an event from 1799, while its former use as a village inn and its current use as a farm reflect two different periods.

Comparing Architectural Styles

All the façades of De Drie Kogels have windows with six panes. The building has a hipped roof and a dormer with a triangular gable, while the barn is partly made of wood. The building’s former function tells the story of how it was used, while its windows, roof and barn convey its specific architectural form.

Roof terminology also varies: a hipped roof has sloping surfaces on all sides, while a gabled roof has two sloping surfaces that meet at the ridge. A dormer is a structure that projects from the roof. At De Drie Kogels, its gable is specifically described as triangular.

Zeldenrust is a relatively old kop-hals-romp farm in Follega, built of yellow bricks. Straatweg 29 is a kop-romp farm with a gabled roof between gables with chimneys topped by chimney plates. When comparing the architecture, note Zeldenrust’s materials and farm type, and the roof and chimney details at Straatweg 29.

Waterways and Seasonal Planning

The Follegasloot was once an important waterway between the Groote Brekken and the Tjeukemeer. Its historical role is part of the area’s transport history and is defined by these two named bodies of water.

The Wetterroute includes the Klokkenstoel Follega as a stop. As route information may be updated, check before setting out whether the Klokkenstoel is still listed as a stop.

IJsbaan Follega is behind the Follegasleat, near the bridge, and is managed by the Winterwille skating club. Ice skating and sledging are possible there when the ice is safe; the same condition applies to both activities. So when planning your trip, the key question is not which of the two activities to choose, but whether the ice is safe. The conditions differ from those for the Wetterroute: there, it is the current list of stops that matters; at IJsbaan, it is the ice conditions.
