Mantgum combines a specific hiking stage with striking examples of architectural and church history. The Mantgum–Sneek stage of the Elfstedenpad starts in the village; the history of the terp, two homes with distinct designs, and the Mariakerk also offer different points of interest. You can therefore focus your stay on hiking through open pastureland or on architecture and historic church furnishings.

Terp and protected villagescape

Mantgum developed on a terp on the western bank of the Middelzee. A terp is a raised settlement site, explaining the village’s historic origins. Part of the original terp was later removed; this change is also part of the village’s history. Mantgum is designated a protected village sight. As well as individual buildings, the village as a whole offers a cultural and historical perspective, complemented by the architectural and decorative features of its houses and the Mariakerk.

Homes between brick and eclecticism

The house at Dokter Fokkewei 1 in Mantgum was built in 1910 to a design by architect D. Meintema. Its brick architecture is influenced by the Amsterdam School. The building at Seerp van Galemawei 4 was built around 1870 as a rentier’s house in the eclectic style, predominantly featuring Neoclassical elements. These homes therefore display different architectural accents: the 1910 house is characterized by brick and the influence of the Amsterdam School, while the older rentier’s house has an eclectic design with a predominantly Neoclassical character.

Mariakerk: architectural history and furnishings

The Mariakerk dates from the early fifteenth century. Over the course of its history, the church was raised, plastered, and fitted with pointed-arch windows; the old saddleback tower was replaced by a new tower with a tall spire. Its furnishings include pieces from around 1780 with carvings by master craftsman Hermannus Berkebijl. The pulpit is round and has a round sounding board. The organ was built in 1879 by L. van Dam & Zn. These dates therefore refer to different things: the church’s early origins, the furnishings, and the organ’s construction.

Hiking the Elfstedenpad

For a hike, the Mantgum–Sneek stage of the Elfstedenpad is a specific option. It starts in Mantgum and follows the Zwette through open pastureland. The named waterway and open landscape define the stage’s described route and distinguish this hiking focus from the historic buildings in the village. If you plan to make the trail the focus of your stay, check current route conditions before setting out.

Cycling route and art in the village

The Wind in de rug cycling route uses Mantgum station for the return journey by train with bicycles on an Arriva train. If you plan this route, check the current conditions for train travel and taking bicycles on board in advance. This lets you factor the return train journey into your route planning.

The IJsbaankeunstrûte offers a different cultural experience: it features a work of art by Hendrik Elings at Mantgum’s ice rink. A phone is required for the digital route. While the Mariakerk is associated with architectural and decorative details, this route takes you to a named work of art and uses a digital format.
