Weidum is officially designated as a protected village. Historical points of interest include the slender tower of Johanneskerk, the former terp and the Hegedyk, as well as the Kaatsen tradition. If you are looking for a hotel in Weidum, these different themes can guide your travel plans: local history, remembrance, sports history and seasonal activities each offer a distinct focus.

Villagescape, dike and Johanneskerk

The historic village centre lies west of the Hegedyk, a former sea dike that protected people from the waters of the Middelzee. The protected village designation identifies the character of the place; the Hegedyk adds the dike’s former protective function to this picture. The slender tower of Johanneskerk Weidum dates from shortly after 1100. Its date provides an early point of reference in the village’s history.

Northwest of Johanneskerk is a separate family cemetery belonging to the Bumas, a noble family from the village. In addition to the history of the buildings, this offers a distinct point of reference in the form of a specific local family history.

Terp, windmotor and remembrance

The AMERIKAANSE WINDMOTOR is a landmark at the edge of Weidum’s excavated terp. It was built in the early 1930s to drain the pastureland in the village centre, which had been left lower by the removal of the terp. The structure thus links a change to the landscape with a practical drainage task.

The war memorial to mr. S.M. van Haersma Buma is a two-metre-high square pillar with a carved flame; it stands on a war grave. It commemorates van Haersma Buma, who died at Neuengamme concentration camp on 11 December 1942. The windmotor and the memorial offer different perspectives: one concerns the use of the land, the other the remembrance of a person.

Kaatsen and event dates

The Froulju’s PC was founded four years after the women’s category in Kaatsen was officially introduced in 1974. It is the annual highlight of the women’s Kaatsen season in Weidum and takes place in August. This timeline links a specific milestone in sports history with a recurring event tradition.

The Kaatsveld Weidum of KV Nije Kriich hosts, among other events, the Bangma Partij and the women’s PC. If you would like to plan your trip around a Partij or the Froulju’s PC, check the current event date in advance.

Picking flowers and dining

Pluktún Weidum, behind the church, offers organically grown flowers for visitors to pick themselves. Garden shears are provided, and flowers in bloom may be picked. As this is a seasonal activity, check current opening information before visiting.

WeidumerHout welcomes guests for dinner, lunch, coffee or drinks, including those travelling on foot or by bicycle; check whether it is currently open before visiting. If you are planning a visit, check the current offerings. WeidumerHout aims to serve affordable, local and seasonal food using products from the surrounding area. Picking flowers and dining therefore offer different options for planning a trip: one is seasonal, while the other includes a range of food and drinks.
