Hummelo: Local History and Nature

If you’re looking for a hotel in Hummelo, the townscape, architectural history and surrounding nature give the destination a distinctive character. Hummelo has a protected townscape, while historical ties to Landgoed Enghuizen have also shaped the town’s history. Hekenbroek nature reserve lies nearby. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to explore the town centre and its architectural history, follow a cycling route or plan a walk in the nature reserve.

Town Centre, Estate and Church Architecture

Hummelo’s town centre was established in 828 on a river dune near Landgoed Enghuizen. The estate was first mentioned as a havezate in 1326. The dates refer to different things: 828 marks the establishment of the town centre, while 1326 is the first mention of the estate as a havezate. Only fragments of natural stone remain on the estate as reminders of Kasteel Enghuizen.

The Dorpskerk was built in 1838 on the site of an older church, first mentioned in 1328. Here, too, the dates mark different milestones: 1328 refers to the earlier church, while 1838 is the year the Dorpskerk was built. Regardless of individual buildings, Hummelo has a protected townscape. During a visit, you can therefore consider local history, individual buildings and the protection of the townscape as distinct aspects.

Buildings and Cultural Landmarks

Het Wapen van Heeckeren is a single-storey, cross-wing building from the early 19th century with a hipped roof. Its architectural form, storey and roof are the defining details when looking at the town’s architecture. The building housing De Gouden Karper in Hummelo has been used as an inn or brewery since 1642. This date refers to the building’s use, a different historical aspect from the construction date of Het Wapen van Heeckeren. Hummelo is also home to a life-size bronze monument to the rock band Normaal.

Nature and Routes Nearby

The wet Hekenbroek carr woodland nature reserve lies near Hummelo. It is home to many species of butterflies, fungi, toads and salamanders. Visitors can explore the area on foot between sunrise and sunset. Walks are therefore limited to a specific time window, which you can take into account when planning your day.

For cyclists, the Monumentenroute Hummelo-Keppel-Drempt passes through Hummelo and along Landgoed Enghuizen. The Bronckhorster landleven cycling route, by contrast, runs through the municipality of Bronckhorst along a centuries-old trade route and is surrounded by forests, meadows and fields. The two descriptions have different points of focus: Hummelo and the estate are explicitly part of the Monumentenroute, while Bronckhorster landleven focuses on the municipality, the trade route and the surrounding landscape.

Cyclists and walkers can stop at Het Wapen van Heeckeren for coffee, tea or hot chocolate. The drinks on offer may change, so check what is available before your visit. Another landmark is the Normaal statue: the Tegelroute Hummelo starts behind the statue, near Kasteelzicht. Animal lovers can enjoy a Meet & Greet with close contact with alpacas at Alpaca Boerderij Hummelo. Please check this offering directly with the farm in advance.
