If you’re planning a stay in Beesd, you can use several themes to guide your travel plans: the architecture and history of the village, the paths at Heerlijkheid Mariënwaerdt, and regional offerings. The route lengths provided can help you compare different trails by distance.

Churches, a windmill and a historic village scene

Sint Pieterskerk is a brick hall church with white-plastered façades. Its imposing late Gothic tower is protected as a separate monument. The Heilige Kruisverheffingkerk is another striking example of architecture: it is a three-aisled Neo-Gothic hall church with a partly enclosed tower. It is among the earliest works by architect Alfred Tepe (1840–1920). During its restoration in the early 2000s, some of the Neo-Gothic interior was reinstated.

Voorstraat also shapes the village’s historic character. The protected streetscape extends for about 900 metres and is lined with clipped lime trees. At De Vrijheid, the site’s history dates back to the 14th century: at that time, a compulsory mill stood there, under the authority of the Mariënwaerdt Abbey near Beesd. The exact year the present-day windmill was built is unknown; it probably dates from the 18th century.

Walking and cycling at Heerlijkheid Mariënwaerdt

You can cycle, hike or mountain bike at Heerlijkheid Mariënwaerdt all year round. The routes offer different highlights. The 5 km Kloosterroute passes manor houses, monumental farmhouses, hay barns and flood barns. The 9 km Leidschehoevepad crosses a landscape shaped by old dikes, standard fruit trees and a historic estate. At 12 km, the Kooiroute is longer than these two trails; you can start at De Stapelbakker.

There are several options for mountain biking, too: the MTB Trail Mariënwaerdt consists of two interconnected routes and a junior route. The red Mariënwaerdt Hoog route runs for about 12 km between the railway line and the River Linge. When choosing a route, you can first decide between hiking and mountain biking, then compare the stated distances.

Landscape and estate history

The heart of the historic estate includes a park woodland, a kitchen garden and an entrance avenue. Meadows flank the grounds, which are crossed by two lateral avenues. More than 200 walnut trees line Notenlaan; they were planted in a double row in 1928. Along the embankment of Appeldijk, the dike is lined with standard trees. These different features each give the landscape its own character, from orderly rows of trees to open meadows and park woodland.

During the annual Landgoedfair, guided tours explore the history of Heerlijkheid Mariënwaerdt. Check the event dates before your trip. The Enspijkse Veer, a tourist ferry for pedestrians and bicycles, runs between the village of Enspijk and Heerlijkheid Mariënwaerdt. As it operates seasonally, check its operating times before you travel.

Regional products and a practical comparison

Organic estate products are available at the Landgoedwinkel at Heerlijkheid Mariënwaerdt. These include vegetable jellies and jams from the kitchen garden, chutneys, curd, estate cheese and estate juices. The selection also includes Lakenvelder beef, homemade apple pie and walnut tarts made from a recipe by Baroness Van Verschuer. In Beesd, restaurant De Stapelbakker serves pancakes made with organic ingredients.

When planning your stay, you can choose based on what you’re most interested in: the churches and village scene provide the setting for an architecture and history outing, while the various paths at Mariënwaerdt suit different distances and interests. The Landgoedfair adds guided tours about the estate’s history; remember to plan around the Enspijkse Veer’s seasonal operating times.
