Ammerzoden: Castle History and Trails
Accommodation in Ammerzoden
Discover Ammerzoden through two distinct historic sites: Kasteel Ammersoyen is a medieval castle complex surrounded by moats, while the Ruïnekerk’s history is linked to its elevated location and flooding. Hiking routes take you through the surrounding area and include the castle. For planning your trip, the castle’s architecture, the church’s history and hiking offer different points of interest; plan your stay around whichever of these themes interests you most.
Kasteel Ammersoyen: Castle and Landscape
Kasteel Ammersoyen is a medieval castle with four towers, an imposing Great Hall six metres high, an outer bailey and moats. This late-medieval castle complex, surrounded by two moats, has a square main castle with round corner towers. The outer bailey is almost square, with an extension adjoining one side. During your visit, you can move freely around the castle and climb every staircase; you can explore it at your own pace.
The location is another distinctive feature of the complex: Kasteel Ammersoyen lies on the west side of a largely silted-up bend of the River Meuse, which curves around Ammerzoden to the north. The Meersloot is a remnant of this former river bend and feeds the moat. The moat’s water supply is thus directly connected to the former river landscape. The grounds also include two medieval gardens.
Free parking and a charging station for electric cars are available at Kasteel Ammersoyen. During events, the parking fees for the respective event apply. If you are planning to visit as part of an event, check the applicable parking arrangements in advance.
The Ruïnekerk: History and Elevated Location
The Ruïnekerk stands in open countryside, surrounded by tall trees. Because of its elevated location, it served as a refuge for people and animals during floods. Its surroundings and former function are therefore connected: the raised site had a practical purpose during high water. A church made of large bricks was built in the 13th century. The entire church building of the Ruïnekerk was completed around 1547; the bell was also hung in the tower that year.
Hiking Routes Around Ammerzoden
The Baanbrekerpad runs through the countryside around Ammerzoden and Well and also passes Kasteel Ammersoyen. Another option is “Stappen door de historie van Ammersoyen”: it is 9 kilometres long, divided into two hiking stages, and includes a visit to the castle. The two routes offer different points of reference for choosing between them. On the Baanbrekerpad, the surroundings of Ammerzoden and Well and the section passing the castle are relevant; the named excursion also has a specified total length and number of stages. If the castle connection is especially important to you when hiking, it is explicitly part of the Baanbrekerpad route. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a stated distance and stages, “Stappen door de historie van Ammersoyen” provides that guidance.
