Rossum offers several points of interest for your stay: architectural history at Slot Rossum and the tower of the Hervormde Kerk, views of the Waal, and a marked trail through varied landscapes. These themes reveal different sides of the town and can help you choose a destination.

Castle and church tower

Slot Rossum is in the centre and is now used as the town hall. The small castle has a rectangular floor plan and was built around the middle of the 19th century by Baron van Randwijck in the Neo-Tudor style. A medieval castle previously stood on the site; it was demolished in the 18th century. The present building thus brings together the history of its medieval predecessor and the period when the 19th-century castle was built.

Slot Rossum’s design is eclectic. Its distinctive features include battlements, Gothic-style windows and a moat. The tower of the Hervormde Kerk has a different architectural character: it is Romanesque and built of tuff. Round-arched and rectangular blind arcades, arcaded friezes and sound openings with paired small columns decorate the tower. If you are interested in architectural styles, Rossum offers a concrete comparison between the Neo-Tudor-style castle and a Romanesque church tower.

Views and stork station

A Social Sofa on the Waaldijk invites you to take a rest; from there, the view stretches far across the Waal. A path through the Slingerbos behind Slot Rossum leads to the dike and another viewpoint over the river. This gives you both a named place to rest and enjoy the view, and a path connecting woodland, dike and river views.

The poles of the outdoor station for white storks, which opened in 1989, are visible from the road. The birds can be observed seasonally. The station has around 20 nests, though the number may change over time. It is still active and takes part, among other things, in the annual stork count by Stichting Ooievaars Research & Knowhow (STORK); participation schedules may vary.

The Zandslagenpad

The Zandslagenpad is marked with blue clogs and can be walked in either direction. The starting and finishing point is Restaurant De Gouden Molen at Waaldijk 5 in Rossum. The route is therefore identified by a specific marker and a named starting and return point.

From Rossum, the route follows the river for an extended stretch along the Waaldijk towards Hurwenen. It then passes through the areas known as the Zandslagen. The return route goes through the riverbank landscape, past vegetable and ornamental gardens and small orchards on the outer slope of the Maasdijk, known as “overtuinen.” In the order described, the longer riverside section, the Zandslagen and the gardens on the return route follow one another.

The route and access conditions may change; temporary diversions may also affect the markings. Check the current route before setting out.

Fair in Rossum

The fair in Rossum is scheduled as a collective celebration if an event permit has been issued or a notification accepted. It runs from Thursday to Sunday. If the fair is important to your travel plans, check the specific dates and local information in advance.
