Westernieland: History, Routes and Herbs
Accommodation in Westernieland
Westernieland combines a late medieval settlement pattern with the history of the Christmas Flood of 1717. It also offers a short village walk, longer walking and cycling routes, and herbal activities at Kristin's Kruiderij. This takes you from the village’s historic character to practical ways to include the landscape and herbal themes in your stay.
Local History and the Christmas Flood
Westernieland is a late medieval dispersed village. The term describes a settlement pattern with houses spread out across the area; it refers to the layout of the village, not just a single building. A defining historical event was the Christmas Flood of 1717: it almost completely destroyed Westernieland, but the church survived. Some gravestones in the cemetery also bear witness to former hunters in Westernieland. The settlement pattern describes the village’s historical type, while the flood was a specific event with far-reaching consequences for Westernieland.
Walks by Duration and Focus
The short village walk stays within the built-up area and passes a landscape featuring changes in elevation, remnants of dikes and kolks. Kolks, or depressions formed by water, were created during the Christmas Flood of 1717. They therefore provide a tangible link between the landscape and the historical event. The longer walking and cycling routes around Westernieland take between 30 minutes and three hours. This range gives you a sense of how much time to allow if you plan a longer outing during the day; you can also choose according to your preferred mode of travel. The availability of individual routes may change. Check in advance which ones are currently available.
A Route Towards the Wadden Sea
The “Wiededorpen en waddenkust” route heads towards the Wadden Sea near Westernieland, a unique natural area full of life. This is a different point of reference from the village walk: the walk stays within the built-up area, while the route leads towards the Wadden Sea. When choosing a route, you can decide whether to focus on the village and its landscape features or on the direction of the Wadden Sea.
Herbs, Skincare and an Old House
Kristin's Kruiderij is located in one of Westernieland’s oldest houses and offers hands-on workshops and talks about herbs and natural skincare. The workshops are practical, while the talks offer another way to explore the same subjects. Kristin's Kruiderij also uses the herbs to make aromatic tea. The house connects these activities with the area’s history; the tea is a practical example of how the herbs are used. If you would like to plan a workshop or talk, check the dates in advance. The herbs are used for everything from skincare to tea.
