When looking for a hotel in Wagenborgen, local history, nature or outdoor activities may shape your travel plans. Specific highlights include the Petruskerk and the history of Groot-Bronswijk, the annual Proostmeerloop and the international Dollard Cycle Route. Other landscape features include the Proostmeer, a recreational lake, and the Hondshalstermeer, south of Wagenborgen. The lakes differ in both size and the recreational activities mentioned. You can start by choosing a destination based on what matters most for your stay.

History at the Petruskerk and Groot-Bronswijk

The Historisch Centrum Groot-Bronswijk is located in the De Ontmoeting building at Hoofdweg 43, right next to the Petruskerk. The church is at Hoofdweg 41. The two addresses are therefore side by side and provide a convenient landmark for finding your way around Wagenborgen. The Petruskerk has a mechanical tower clock, probably dating from 1883. The organ was supplied by organ builder Mart Vermeulen in 1914. A collection description from May 2025 notes that the Historisch Centrum holds an extensive photo archive, historical material and models of distinctive buildings that once stood on the site. Check the current visiting arrangements before visiting the centre.

The history of Groot Bronswijk also includes the Vereniging Tot Christelijke Liefdadigheid (T.C.L.), which was founded at the Wagenborgen site in 1873. In the 1920s, an English landscape garden was created there around the T.C.L. The Kijkerroute on the former Groot-Bronswijk grounds offers insights into the history of the former psychiatric hospital. The park and route draw attention to different aspects of the grounds: their historic design and the history of the former clinic. Arrangements for the Kijkerroute may change; check them before visiting.

Lakes and cycling connections

The Proostmeer, also known as the Wagenborgermeer, is an approximately 3.5-hectare excavated lake on sandy ground and is used for recreation. The Hondshalstermeer, a 180-hectare lake managed by Staatsbosbeheer as a nature reserve, lies south of Wagenborgen. The difference in size is considerable: the Proostmeer covers about 3.5 hectares, while the Hondshalstermeer covers 180 hectares. Cycle paths run along the shores of the Hondshalstermeer, where canoeing is also possible. Wagenborgen is also on the well-known international Dollard Cycle Route. This gives you two different cycling connections: the town’s location on the route and the paths by the lake to the south. Conditions and access points at the Hondshalstermeer may change. Check them before your outing.

Running event and playground

The Proostmeerloop is an annual running event in Wagenborgen, open to local and visiting participants. The event includes races over 5 and 10 kilometres, among others. The Kidsrun is divided by age group, with different distances for each. Routes and youth categories may vary from one edition to another; dates and registration details also vary by edition. If you want to plan your trip around the event, check the details for the specific edition.

The Speulbult is a playground in Wagenborgen. When the municipality of Eemsdelta introduced its playground map, the Speulbult was listed as one of four playgrounds. The map helps people find playgrounds and activity parks across the municipality. The playground and the map offer different ways to find your way: one is a specific place in Wagenborgen, while the other lets you search across the municipality.

Highlights for your stay

For planning purposes, local history and event dates are separate considerations: the Petruskerk and Groot-Bronswijk offer a cultural and historical focus, while the Proostmeerloop depends on the dates of the specific edition. Cycling has two points of interest: Wagenborgen’s location on the Dollard Cycle Route and the paths along the Hondshalstermeer. If you’re looking for a hotel in Wagenborgen, you can first decide on the purpose of your trip and check the running event date separately.
