Nieuwe Pekela: Museum and Windmill
Accommodation in Nieuwe Pekela
Nieuwe Pekela in Groningen has tangible attractions, including the Kapiteinshuis, a historic church and the De Zwaluw windmill. If you are looking for a hotel, you can choose a location for exploring the town or visiting family. The earlier blanket promises about hotels and cruises are not a basis for this.
Kapiteinshuis and maritime history
The Kapiteinshuis Museum conveys what life was like in the 19th century. At the entrance, two hardstone plinths bearing initials and the year 1799 point to when it was built. The house dates from an early boom period for seafaring in the peat colonies. This local history is not the same as a present-day cruise port. Check museum opening hours and possible admission fees before visiting. The De Zwaluw windmill, a stone gallery Dutch windmill, was built in 1891 on behalf of J. Graver. Here too, check current access arrangements and possible guided tours.
Church and family attractions
The Evangelical Lutheran Church at Abraham Westerstraat A 1 is a Rijksmonument. Its organ was built by P. van Oeckelen in 1868. The building, cemetery and mortuary are part of a culturally and historically valuable ensemble. The Lutheran cemetery on the boundary between the former Oude and Nieuwe Pekela is notable for its administrative history; respect the quiet use of the site. Families can visit the Dierenweide near Burgemeester van Boekhovenpark, where animals can be seen up close, as well as the Heeresmeer playground. A children’s cycling route runs through Nieuwe Pekela. Check opening times, rules on contact with the animals and the route before your visit.
Choose a hotel after exploring the town
Compare a specific room based on its address in relation to the museum, park or event, as well as price and amenities. The town name alone does not tell you how far it is to walk or whether a guesthouse is available. For the wider region, see Pekela.
