Accommodation in Sint Annen
Sint Annen combines a late medieval history with distinctive buildings and a redesigned village entrance. If you are looking for a hotel in Sint Annen, the character of the village can help you decide whether its history and rural architecture match your travel interests. Notable features include the former church space on Kerkpad, the mill on Molenpad, and historic homes and farm buildings. The pick-your-own garden and nearby Sint Annermaar also provide distinct points of reference.
Origins and Remembrance on Kerkpad
The settlement emerged in the Late Middle Ages near the convent of Parva Adwerth, also known as Klein Aduard; the convent was founded in 1345. The former church was housed in the rear part of the sexton’s house on Kerkpad. Pointed-arch niches on the building recall this use. During a later renovation, windows for the residence were fitted into the niches. The façade thus brings together a reminder of the former church space and a later alteration. In the 1970s, the village community had a bell frame erected in the small square on Kerkpad. The niches and bell frame are different testimonies to the village’s history: the former are architectural traces of an earlier function, while the latter is a later addition arising from village life.
Homes and Farm Architecture
The rest of Sint Annen’s buildings consist mainly of modest homes with hipped-gable roofs. With a hipped-gable roof, the hip is shortened at the gable ends, giving the roofline a different silhouette from a full gable. House number 21 is a substantial residence with a central hallway. The farm complex at Boersterweg 26, by contrast, displays pronounced farm architecture: it is a Rijksmonument of the Kop-Hals-Romp type. The type name describes its division into a dwelling, a connecting neck, and an agricultural building. The dwelling has a gabled roof; its front façade features two six-pane windows and small openings for light. Six-pane windows are also found in the gable and side façades. In the village landscape, modest homes thus stand alongside a separately identified historic farmstead. The roof form, central hallway, and façade layout illustrate different aspects of the architecture.
Mill and Former Inn
The mill, founded in 1818, is located on Molenpad at the southern edge of the village. An extension transformed the mill’s plastered body into the village community centre De Meuln. Its building history links its former use as a mill with the building’s later communal use. The former inn Klinkhamer tells a different story: it stands in the middle of Hoofdstraat, in a building set crosswise to the road and dating from around 1870. At De Meuln, the conversion of the mill’s body shapes the building’s history; at Klinkhamer, the focus is on its former function as an inn and the building’s position. The two examples show the different paths taken by historic buildings in Sint Annen.
Garden and Surrounding Area
The redesigned northern entrance to the village includes a pick-your-own garden and a circular hedge along Thesingerweg. Benches stand on the inner side of the hedge. The pick-your-own garden was officially opened on June 21, 2024; various flowers, vegetables, and fruit grow there. The combination of a garden, circular enclosure, and benches sets this entrance apart from the building histories of Kerkpad and Molenpad. About 5,000 flower bulbs have also been planted on the northern and southern sides of Sint Annen. Nearby, Sint Annermaar runs toward Kardingermaar. Landscaped green spaces and a named waterway are therefore part of the area’s character, alongside its buildings and former uses.
