Schinveld brings together nature, walking and culture. The Schinveldse Bossen are the largest contiguous forest area in South Limburg and part of the cross-border Heidenatuurpark. Forest, grassland and stream valleys shape this natural area, giving the landscape its varied character.

Nature and Walking Routes in Schinveld

Various birds of prey breed in the Schinveldse Bossen. Mammals found there include foxes, pine martens, stone martens and roe deer. Between Schinveld and the forests lies the open Es. From there, you have an unobstructed view of the forest edge and the herb-rich grasslands, where the rare old cattle breed Heidekoe can be found.

There are several clear landmarks for walks. A signposted 5-star walking route is marked with posts bearing five gold stars. The “Ontdek de Schinveldse Bossen” route follows walking junctions through the extensive forests. Its starting point is at A ge Water / Pastoor Greymansstraat in Schinveld. The star posts mark one route, while the junctions provide guidance on the other.

You can take an international walk in the Dal van de Roode Beek. There, an artificial hill rises beside a lake created as a work of art. From the top, you can enjoy panoramic views over the stream valley. Alongside the extensive forest paths, this offers a distinct landscape with a striking viewpoint.

A wooden bridge in the Schinveldse Bossen leads to the Lammendam Schans. It consists of historic remains of a fortified settlement surrounded by a moat. The bridge connects the natural setting with a tangible example of regional history.

Cultural History and Visiting Hours

The open-air museum Nonke Buusjke offers a glimpse of life and work around 1900. Its authentically furnished historic buildings include a half-timbered farmhouse, a bakehouse, a syrup-making workshop, a carpenter’s workshop, a weaver’s house, a clog-making workshop and a shoemaker’s workshop. The collection ranges from a farmhouse and bakehouse to specialist workshops, showing different aspects of life and craftsmanship at the time.

The entire Nonke Buusjke site is suitable for wheelchair users, and there is also an accessible toilet. Visitors are welcomed on Sundays from Easter Monday through October, between 12:00 and 17:00. Visits from Monday to Saturday can be booked online for groups of 15 or more. If you are planning a museum visit, check the dates and times before setting out.

The history of pilgrimage is also part of Schinveld’s cultural heritage. Historically, many pilgrims came here, especially from the German border region. They sought relief from their ailments through the intercession of Saint Eligius, also known as St. Loeë.
