Discover Overveen: Trails, Nature and History
Accommodation in Overveen
Overveen appeals to travelers who want to include nature trails, historic landscapes and architectural history in their plans. Zuid-Kennemerland National Park offers walking and cycling trails, along with routes through the Elswout and Duinlust country estates, the Koningshof park woodland, the Overveen water tower and the Eerebegraafplaats in the Kennemerduinen. Themes range from outdoor activity and designed landscapes to architectural history and remembrance. This lets you choose the focus of your stay to suit your interests.
Hiking and Cycling in the National Park
Zuid-Kennemerland National Park has 91 kilometers of walking trails, including marked routes, and 33 kilometers of cycling trails through varied woodland and dune landscapes. These network lengths give an idea of the different scales of the walking and cycling routes; they may change over time. Elswout is one of the entrances near Overveen. The national park is designated as a Natura 2000 site.
For a direct route comparison, consider Elswout Groen and Rondje Duinlust. Elswout Groen is paved, 1.7 kilometers long and runs through the Elswout country estate. Along the way are, among other things, the orangery, the coach houses and the Great House. Rondje Duinlust is 1.6 kilometers long and runs through the Duinlust country estate, on the edge of Middenduin in Zuid-Kennemerland. The two routes are almost the same length, but their described surroundings offer different highlights: Elswout has several named buildings along the way, while Duinlust is notable for its location on the edge of Middenduin.
Another option is the Parkbos Koningshof walking route: a short stroll along old avenues through the park woodland. Its English landscape design was laid out at the beginning of the 20th century. Winding paths, bodies of water, hills and open meadows are all part of its design. Alongside the two routes measured in kilometers, this offers a walk and the design of a park woodland as distinct themes.
Landscape, Nature and Architectural History
The Elswout country estate is home to more than 500 species of fungi, as well as 250 different mosses and lichens. This diversity adds a biological dimension to Elswout, alongside its trails and buildings. Both landscape styles have also been preserved on the estate; one of them is the English landscape style. Its preserved design and species diversity offer different perspectives on the same place.
The Overveen water tower was built in 1897–1898 in the Neo-Renaissance style and is part of the Waterleidingbedrijf Zuid-Kennemerland waterworks complex. Both its clearly dated construction period and its place in the complex are important to understanding it. The historic Duinlust country estate reflects a different timeline: it was established between 1814 and 1820 and extensively altered in 1880–1882. This makes it possible to compare a dated building with a country estate that has an initial founding period and a later phase of change.
Remembrance and Getting Your Bearings
The Eerebegraafplaats in the Kennemerduinen near Overveen (municipality of Bloemendaal) contains the graves of 372 resistance fighters executed by firing squad. It offers a distinct focus alongside architectural and landscape history. From the NS railway station in Overveen, it is about a 15-minute walk to the De Kennemerduinen visitor center.
