Haarlemmerliede can be understood through its settlement pattern, the Liede and several named paths. An old church path, a walking route through the village and a cycle path are distinguished by their respective descriptions. When choosing a hotel, these specific themes can help you decide whether you would mainly like to explore paths and history.

Settlement and Waterway

Haarlemmerliede is a ribbon settlement along the Liede. In the past, the Liede connected the Haarlemmermeer with the Spaarne. These are two different perspectives: the ribbon settlement describes the settlement pattern, while the connection between the two waterways is part of the river’s earlier history.

Paths with Different Destinations

The Lieveldenpad is an old church path through the Lievelden that leads directly to Haarlemmerliede Church. The Haarlemmerliedetocht is a walking route through the village and on to the Veerplas near Penningsveer. The two paths therefore differ mainly in their stated character and destination: one is a church path leading to the church, the other a walking route leading to the Veerplas. The theme of the path and its destination are therefore what matter when choosing between them.

The Militairpad is a cycle path between Kerkweg and Notweg in Haarlemmerliede and Spaarndam. As infrastructure can change, check the current route before setting off. This distinguishes the cycle path from those described as a church path and a walking route.

Church History and Fort

In 1857, the Sint-Jacobus de Meerderekerk replaced the church that had previously been housed in a farmhouse on Liedeweg. Fort bij Penningsveer, a concrete fort, was built between 1897 and 1901 as a Model A fort. It is also a provincial monument and part of the Stelling van Amsterdam. Chronologically, these are two distinct historical reference points: the replacement of the earlier church in 1857 and the fort’s construction between 1897 and 1901. Concrete describes the building material, while Model A refers to the fort type; the two terms describe different features of the structure.

For overnight planning, the fort’s use is important: Fort bij Penningsveer is used as group accommodation for schools and institutions.

Games and Catering at Liedehoeve

At Liedehoeve, Boerengolf is played in a meadow with cows; a game takes about 1.5 hours. Boerendart, shuffleboard and a miniature golf course are also available. For your day’s itinerary, you can allow about an hour and a half for Boerengolf; the other games offer additional options.

Picnics and a farm lunch buffet are also available at Liedehoeve. Games and food are separate offerings and should be planned accordingly. As the availability of activities and food options may change, check before your visit whether the options you want are available.
