Eenigenburg is a good choice for a stay focused on routes, landscape and local history. Specific points of interest include two routes of different lengths, the wielen and the history of ’t Huys te Nuwendore. ’t Hoogt, the Eenigenburg Museum and a biodynamic dairy farm each offer their own focus. If you are looking for a hotel in Eenigenburg, these themes can help shape your plans: from a walk to history and agriculture.

Walking routes and their conditions

Both routes start at the Eenigenburg trailhead and partly follow unpaved paths. The Ommetje Nuwendore is 5.01 km long; dogs are not allowed on this route. The purple route is 6.8 km long and is closed during the bird-nesting season. It follows the West Frisian Omringdijk, along both Burger Wielen, and takes in farm tracks and country roads through the polder north of Eenigenburg. The purple route is therefore 1.79 km longer than the Ommetje. Check the latest route details before setting out, as path conditions and seasonal restrictions may change.

Wielen and birdlife

The area of the wielen is easy to survey from the West Frisian Omringdijk. The wielen are frequently visited by ducks and geese; wigeons are especially numerous there. For nature lovers, this combines a view of the area with a specifically named bird species.

’t Huys te Nuwendore and local history

A castle was built in 1287 near the West Frisian Omringdijk in Eenigenburg, commissioned by Count Floris V. It is now known as ’t Huys te Nuwendore. Its site was only 25 metres from the Friese Omringdijk. Flooding is considered the likely cause of the castle’s destruction. ’t Hoogt is Eenigenburg’s main terp and one of two terps still clearly visible in the landscape. This places a precisely dated castle history alongside a visible landscape feature as distinct historical points of reference.

Museum and agriculture

The Eenigenburg Museum features the exhibition “Het Tijdskompas Eenigenburg” and also tells the story of the Eenigenburg family’s emigration to the USA. Its cultural and historical scope thus ranges from the history of the castle to a family story connected to the United States.

Agriculture can also be a focus of your stay. At the biodynamic dairy farm Zuivelboerderij De Buitenplaats in Eenigenburg, visitors are welcome to watch and help with the milking of 25 cows in the morning and evening. If you would like to plan this visit, arrange it for the morning or evening. The farm processes its milk in a dedicated room to make traditional farmhouse buttermilk, yoghurt, butter and milk.
