In Muiden, fortification history, church architecture and routes on foot, by bicycle or by canoe offer different focal points for your stay. The fortified town lies at the intersection of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie and the Stelling van Amsterdam. The Zeesluis Muiden connects the Vecht with the IJmeer. These sites and routes give your plans a concrete framework—from historic buildings to activities on the water.

Fortified Town and Architectural History

Muiderslot Castle has stood there since 1285. The Pruimenboomgaard behind the castle was first laid out in the 17th century. These details refer to different periods in the town’s and garden’s history. If you are interested in fortifications and defensive structures, the Westbatterij also offers striking architectural features: the defensive complex includes earthworks, a moat and associated buildings. Within the complex are a bombproof tower and a drawbridge.

The construction of the Zeesluis is also worth a closer look. The lock has been a Rijksmonument since 2015. The pedestrian bridge at the lock turns rather than lifting up. This makes the history of water engineering and the bridge’s distinctive mechanism different from the fortifications of the Westbatterij.

At Fort C, also known as Muizenfort, an eight-minute film shown on three interconnected screens presents the history of Vesting Muiden and its role within the Oude en Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie and the Stelling van Amsterdam. Eight information panels cover details of Muiden’s history over the centuries. Fort C also has an unattended VVV information point. The escape room “De Cryptograaf” can also be booked there. As the information point’s services and booking availability may change, check both in advance if needed.

Churches and Events Throughout the Year

The H. Nicolaaskerk in Muiden dates from the beginning of the 19th century. Its features include an imposing neoclassical façade and stepped gables. The Grote Kerk, also known as Sint Nicolaaskerk, is a late Gothic pseudo-basilica from the beginning of the 15th century. Its tuff-stone tower dates from the 12th century. Concerts are regularly held in the Grote Kerk; check the latest dates if you are planning to attend one.

The Historische Kring Stad Muiden organizes the Open Monumentendag annually in September. The specific event date may change, so check the date if you want to plan your trip around it. The organization also runs guided tours led by its guides.

Routes on Foot, by Bicycle and by Canoe

The Belevingsroute Muiden is an approximately two-kilometre circular walk along the ramparts, with twelve information points. You can follow the route without an app; signs along the ramparts tell stories. For exploring on foot, this walk combines an approximate length with stops covering the town’s history. The guided tours run by the Historische Kring Stad Muiden are another way to focus on Muiden’s history with guides.

On the water, the Fortenland canoe route can start at the Keetpoortsluis in Muiden. White, hexagonal signs mark the route in both directions. The Fortenland cycling route is also signposted, designed for leisure, and laid out as a themed route; it follows the junction network of the Fietsnetwerk Gooi & Vecht. The two routes therefore differ both in their mode of travel and in their signage and classification.

The cycling route passes seven forts in Gooi & Vecht, all of which belong to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Hollandse Waterlinies. This regional route connection complements Muiden’s architectural history without equating the seven forts with individual local structures. When planning, you can choose between a walk along the ramparts, a themed cycling route and a canoe trip starting at the Keetpoortsluis.

Plan a Visit to Forteiland Pampus

Forteiland Pampus is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can take the Pampus ferry from Muiden or Amsterdam IJburg to the historic island. On Forteiland Pampus, you can visit the museum fort and its attractions. The ferry connections are a separate planning consideration: check the timetable before including the crossing in your stay. Details of the museum fort’s attractions may also change.
