Naarden: Fortress Town, Museums and Nature
Accommodation in Naarden
Fortifications and cultural heritage take centre stage in Naarden-Vesting, while the Naardermeer is known for its wetlands and birdwatching. Museums, historical walks and boat trips along the fortress moats add to these themes. When planning your stay, you can decide whether you are most interested in architecture, the history of Jan Amos Comenius or nature watching.
Fortress Town and Architecture
Naarden-Vesting is one of the best-preserved fortified towns in the Netherlands and is unique in Europe for its star-shaped layout, with double ramparts, gatehouses and bastions. The fortress is part of the Hollandse Waterlinies, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Those interested in architectural history will also find two very different highlights: Stadhuis Naarden is a Rijksmonument dating from 1601, built in the Dutch Renaissance style. Grote Kerk Naarden is known for its world-famous barrel vault and has a history spanning more than 500 years.
Museums and Comenius
The Nederlands Vestingmuseum is located on Bastion Turfpoort in Naarden-Vesting. Visitor options include audio tours in Dutch, English and German. At the museum, you can walk along the green ramparts and explore underground casemates. This connects the history of the fortified town with first-hand insights into its fortifications.
The Comenius Museum is devoted to the life and work of Czech scholar Jan Amos Comenius (1592–1670). The exhibition “Mundus Comenii” in the monastery hall presents his life, work and world. Comenius died in Amsterdam on 15 November 1670; a week later, he was buried in Naarden. For a trip focused on cultural history, the museum offers a distinctive way to learn about him and his connection to Naarden.
The Comenius Day is held each year in late March at Comenius’s grave and statue. The Comenius Prize is awarded and the Comenius Lecture is delivered during the event. If you would like to time your stay to coincide with it, check the specific event dates for the year you plan to visit.
The Weegschaalmuseum is housed in the Spaanse Huis. In the former IJkkantoor, visitors can learn how weights and measures were once verified, calibrated and adjusted. You can request a copy of a treasure hunt from the educational programme at the ticket desk. The visit thus combines the history of weights and measures with an additional discovery activity.
Walks and Boat Trips
A historical walking tour of Naarden is available for purchase at the Gele Loods visitor centre, also known as VVV Naarden, in Dutch, English and German. Another way to explore Naarden-Vesting on foot is the “Dichter bij de Stad” walk, which passes 18 locations featuring striking poems on the walls. The historical walking tour and the literary route offer different perspectives on the town.
You can also experience the fortress landscape from the water: Vestingvaart Naarden offers daily trips on classic boats through the northern section of the fortress moats. If you plan to take a trip, check the timetable for your visit day. The walking tour and the boat trip offer different experiences, and there is no need to combine them into a particular route.
Nature at the Naardermeer
The Naardermeer is a protected nature reserve with dense swamp forests and wet meadows. Rare otters and purple herons live there. There are five birdwatching sites around the Naardermeer. The area therefore offers a different focus from the buildings and museums of Naarden-Vesting.
The Laarzenpad trail crosses boardwalks and meadows. At various observation points, you can watch and listen to birds. This distinction can help when planning your trip: the fortified town offers architecture, history and museums, while the Naardermeer is focused on wetlands and birdwatching. You can decide which of these perspectives will shape your stay when searching for a hotel in Naarden, based on your travel interests.
