Callantsoog: Beach, Nature and Culture

If you’re looking for a hotel in Callantsoog, you can plan your trip around the beach, nature or culture. Excursion options include hiking trails through dunes and polders, beach activities, museums and historic buildings. The destinations vary in landscape, route length and theme, offering practical points of reference for planning your day.

Dunes and Natural Areas

Het Zwanenwater is a diverse, 600-hectare dune area near the coastal town of Callantsoog. It has Natura 2000 status and is officially recognised as a Wetland. Two hiking trails lead through the dunes, measuring 2.5 and 5.8 kilometres respectively. The difference in length can help you choose how far to walk. Natuurmonumenten organises guided excursions there, including long hikes and photography walks. The programme may vary by season, so check in advance which excursions are available on your chosen date. The visitor car park is at Zuidschinkeldijk 3a, 1759 JH Callantsoog. As access information may change, it is also advisable to check before your visit.

Near Callantsoog, outside the town, a 3.3-kilometre hiking route in the Uitlandse Polder passes through open grassland, low dunes, ditches and reed beds. The grasslands are home to orchids and other rare flowering plants. Meadow birds nest there, while natterjack toads can be found in the ditches and pools. Also nearby, Kooibosch-Luttickduin has walking paths through old coppice woodland. The area also contains a type of habitat that is very rare in the Netherlands: purple moor-grass meadow. These two destinations complement the dune landscape of Het Zwanenwater with open polders and woodland.

Beach, Hiking and Cycling

The “De kust van Callantsoog” hiking route passes through the Pettemerduinen, along the beach and beside the Het Zwanenwater nature reserve. The route therefore takes in dunes, coastline and a protected area. Check the signs and conditions locally. For a bike ride through the expansive polders of Noord-Holland, “Dagje fietsen rondom Callantsoog” starts at the Tante Jaantje Museum Farm. Another, 40-kilometre ride starts in Callantsoog, goes to Den Helder and returns. The total distance, destination and return point are all specified, which is helpful if you want to plan a bike ride of a set length. Route conditions may change.

At Callantsoog beach, Surfschool Callantsoog offers lessons for everyone from beginners to advanced surfers. Lesson availability may vary by season. For a small fee, De Toko provides a beach wheelchair for people with disabilities to use on Callantsoog beach. If you plan to use this service, confirm availability before you travel.

Museums and Local History

The Juttersmuseum Callantsoog combines contemporary art with collections of treasures recovered from the sea. Parking is available next to the museum, with additional free parking in the large adjoining car park at Strandslag Voordijk. As parking rules may change, check them before your visit.

A 2025 article on local history describes a collection of objects found at sea and an exhibition about the Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij (KNRM). Another exhibition covers Hollywood, an emergency village established near Callantsoog during the Second World War. Exhibitions may change. The subjects offer different perspectives on coastal history: recovered finds, the rescue society and the story of the emergency village.

Callantsoog’s church is another historic landmark: it was rebuilt in 1580 on the eastern edge of the village. The church tower at Kerkplein 1 houses a bell cast by Geert van Wou in 1491. The two dates mark distinct events in the church’s history: the making of the bell and the later rebuilding.
