Lattrop: Church, Mill and Nature
Accommodation in Lattrop
For a trip to Lattrop, architectural history, milling and nature can be explored as distinct themes. Cycling and walking routes also offer practical options that you can compare by distance and mode of travel. When looking for a hotel in Lattrop, first consider which of these themes you want to shape your trip.
Church and mill: two architectural histories
The Roman Catholic Church of Saints Simon and Jude in Lattrop is a cruciform basilica. It was designed by Joseph Cuypers and Pierre Cuypers Jr. and completed in 1936. As a building in a pure Art Deco style, the church combines a specific architectural form with a clear stylistic classification. Architecture enthusiasts can therefore consider two distinct aspects: the cruciform basilica type and the Art Deco design.
The history of the Oortmanmolen involves a change of location and a change of function. It was built in Tjamsweer in 1779 as an oil mill, together with a barley-peeling mill. In 1910, it was moved to Lattrop and rebuilt there as a grain mill. Today, grain is milled by hand at the mill every week to make flour for Twente bakers and butchers. This makes it possible to distinguish chronologically between its original use as an oil mill, its later reconstruction as a grain mill and its current flour production.
Huis te Breckelenkamp: park and archive
Huis te Breckelenkamp dates back to a manor house built on the site of the Tyhuiss in 1572. The grounds surrounding the house are considered a rare, well-preserved example of a Dutch classical-style estate. The history of the house and the design of the park thus offer two different ways to explore the property. Part of the archive is open to everyone. Check the website in advance to see which archive materials are currently available.
Jongkind and two routes
Lattrop is the birthplace of the painter Johan Barthold Jongkind. The Jongkind Monument stands on the former site of his birthplace and is a small monument in the Saxon style. Jongkind’s name is also given to two routes in the Lattrop-Breklenkamp area: the 8 km Jongkind Route is a walking route along paved and unpaved paths, while the 32 km Jongkind Route is a recreational cycling route through the countryside. The distances and modes of travel allow for a direct comparison without requiring you to assume a particular walking or cycling time.
Countryside, the Dinkel and starry skies
The Bergvennen & Brecklenkampse Veld in Lattrop-Breklenkamp is a Natura 2000 landscape of semi-open heathland, woodland, small bog lakes and grassland. From a bird hide, you can watch birds and ducks at the fens. The Beneden-Dinkeldal follows the course of the Dinkel and includes Ottershagen, a unique meadow bird area.
A 25 km cycling tour through the Beneden-Dinkeldal starts at Erfgoed Bossem in Lattrop-Breklenkamp. Outside the breeding season, you can explore the Dinkel by canoe with a permit. These options differ in important ways for planning: the cycling tour has a specified route length, while canoeing is restricted to outside the breeding season and requires a permit.
In clear weather, visitors can look through large telescopes at the Sterrenwacht Cosmos observatory. The weather condition is important to consider if you plan to include stargazing in your itinerary.
