Discover Bergambacht
Accommodation in Bergambacht
Bergambacht combines a distinctive landscape feature with traces of its local history and a local cheese-making tradition. The town was built on a donk, a sandy hill; this donk is still the highest point in the Krimpenerwaard. Its location on the sandy hill places Bergambacht geographically, while its historical landmarks span different eras. During your stay, you can explore nature, architectural history and cheese-making as separate points of interest.
Nature and trails in the Nespolder
The path through the Nespolder leads from one post to the next across the pastures. After rain, sturdy shoes or even rubber boots may be necessary, so choose your footwear according to the weather. Meadow and marsh birds can be spotted in the Nespolder. Meadow birds stay in wet meadows, while marsh birds live in reed beds. These habitats provide two specific reference points for birdwatching, while trail conditions call for weather-dependent planning.
Castle history and mills
The former castle 's Heeraartsberg can be placed in context through several points in time. Heer Van den Berg had it built around 1250; the earliest surviving mention dates from 1377. The construction date and the mention refer to different things: the construction date is only approximate, while 1377 marks the earliest surviving reference. The castle was demolished in 1909. An apartment complex now stands on its site, with a name and design that recall the former castle. Its connection to the castle's history therefore remains visible in the present-day buildings.
The grain mill Den Arend also has a place in a historical sequence: it was built in 1869 to replace a small wooden post mill dating from 1553. The two dates relate to different mills: 1553 is the date of the predecessor, while 1869 is the date of the grain mill. This example illustrates both a construction date and the relationship between a later building and its predecessor.
Bridge and architectural history
A restored bridge made of hand-moulded IJssel bricks was built at Hoeve Tusschenlanen. Because the bricks match those of the neighboring house, which dates from 1661, the bridge is estimated to be about 360 years old. The age is therefore approximate; 1661 refers to the house and serves as a point of comparison. The bridge thus connects a specific material feature with a historical estimate.
