Abbenbroek combines a protected historic village centre with buildings whose history spans several centuries. At the same time, the village lies between pastureland and the Bernisse nature and recreation area. This gives you two distinct ways to experience the destination: the village’s history around the former harbour basin, and walking or cycling routes that start in or pass through Abbenbroek.

Historic Village Centre and Former Harbour Basin

The historic village centre is designated as a protected town or village conservation area. The former harbour basin remains as a body of water in the centre of the village. A ring of houses, mostly dating from the 17th century, defines the old village centre. The village landscape therefore includes both the layout of the buildings and the former basin as a preserved feature. This distinction is useful for understanding the village: the basin is a single feature in the village centre, while the ring of houses describes the surrounding structure.

Sint Aegidiuskerk: Several Layers of History

The choir of the Sint Aegidiuskerk is an example of Scheldt Gothic architecture from around 1300. The later dates mark a different development: a chapter was founded in 1483, and in 1491 the church was elevated to collegiate church status. This makes it possible to distinguish the choir’s approximate period from the church’s later institutional history. The Sint Aegidiuskerk is also known as the Dorpskerk of Abbenbroek. Its pulpit took its present form in 1613. The church thus brings together a medieval architectural feature and a later, precisely dated furnishing.

Ambachtsherenhuis and De Hoop Mill

The architectural details and historical name of the Ambachtsherenhuis reflect different periods. In the deep right-hand section of the house, there are several thick ground-floor walls that probably date from before the 17th century. In the 19th century, the Ambachtsherenhuis was described as the “hunting lodge” of the lord of Abbenbroek. The dating of the walls remains probable; the name is explicitly associated with the 19th century.

A more recent technical development is connected with De Hoop Mill: on 5 February 2025, both fully restored Potroeden were back in place; a short time later, the mill was once again capable of grinding. This adds a recent, dated milestone to Abbenbroek’s historic buildings.

Between Pastureland and Bernisse: Walking and Cycling Routes

The setting between pastureland and the Bernisse nature and recreation area offers a different focus from the village’s history. There is a clearly named starting point for the walking routes in the Bernisse area: they begin at an information board in the meadow, at the level of the De Buishoek car park in Abbenbroek. If you plan to take one of these routes, you can use this as your starting point.

From Abbenbroek, the Willemien-Hoogwerf cycling route follows the former Bernisse towards Zuidland. As route details can change, it is best to check the route before setting off. The “Proeven uit de polder” cycling route has a different theme: it passes through Abbenbroek and by farms that sell products directly from the farm. While the Willemien-Hoogwerf route is defined by its connection to the former Bernisse and its direction towards Zuidland, “Proeven uit de polder” focuses on farm shops along the route. Check before your trip which farms are currently participating.
