Zuidland combines a protected historic village centre with buildings, historic waterways and nature experiences. The Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science designated the historic village centre as a protected town or village conservation area. This gives you several points of interest to explore when planning your trip: you can learn about the history of the Dorpskerk and the former Binnenhaven, or explore trails through Spuimonding West and experiences along the Bernisse.

Zuidland Village Centre and Dorpskerk

The Dorpskerk Zuidland dates from the first half of the 15th century. Its tower was built around 1470 and still shapes the village’s appearance today. The church was extended in several building phases: shortly after the tower was built, a second nave was added alongside the existing building. This sequence makes it possible to follow the church’s development through its individual stages of construction. Those interested in architecture can see not only a historic building here, but also how it was gradually extended.

The dates provide a guide to the building’s history: the church’s origins in the first half of the 15th century were followed by the construction of the tower around 1470; shortly afterwards, the second nave was added. The tower remains a defining feature of the village’s appearance.

The Former Binnenhaven and De Arend

The former Binnenhaven Zuidland also tells the story of changes in how people used the water and waterways for shipping. During the construction of the dikes, a tidal creek was dammed; the section outside the dikes was used as a harbour. In the 16th century, the harbour was dammed after the Bernisse had become too shallow for shipping. A village pond developed in its place. This sequence connects dike construction, harbour use and changes in shipping with the history of Zuidland.

Another historic date is associated with the De Arend windmill: it was built in 1844 on behalf of Pieter de Gilde. Along with the church and the Binnenhaven, the windmill offers a different perspective on the village’s history. The three subjects represent different aspects of its past: architectural development, water engineering and a 19th-century windmill.

Walking Trail and Views in Spuimonding West

A walking trail runs through the entire Spuimonding West area. Along the way, you cross a bridge and use a hand-operated ferry. From the Spuimonding West viewpoint, you can see a water-rich landscape, as well as rare plants and animals. The trail and viewpoint offer different experiences: the trail takes you through the area and includes the bridge and ferry, while the viewpoint focuses on the landscape and nature.

The Stompaardse-Plasroute offers another way to explore the area: it starts and ends on Stationsweg in Zuidland. The options described therefore differ mainly in how they are laid out: the Stompaardse-Plasroute has a named starting and finishing point, while the walking trail in Spuimonding West runs through the entire area. This information helps distinguish between a route with a fixed start and finish and a trail through an area.

Experiences along the Bernisse

The Bernisse recreation area borders Zuidland. Between Simonshaven and Zuidland, in the heart of the Bernisse nature reserve, Bootverhuur Bernisse provides access to the water. Bootverhuur Bernisse opened on 28 August 2026. The Fluisterboot Bernisse also opened that day; it offers a guided tour through the nature and history of the Bernisse, with a guide on board.

The two offerings appeal to different interests: Bootverhuur Bernisse focuses on access to the water, while the Fluisterboot Bernisse offers a guided tour. Together with the walking trail and viewpoint, they provide different ways to experience the landscape around Zuidland, without requiring everyone to explore it in the same way.
