Boskoop combines a landscape shaped by the nursery trade with botanical gardens, historic architecture and waterways. These themes offer different ways to explore the town when planning a stay: you can focus on gardens and plant collections or turn your attention to the lifting bridges and the Gouwe. Large parts of Boskoop, particularly along and east of the Gouwe, remain largely intact and are characteristic of the town’s heyday from the late 19th century to the first half of the 20th century. The Boskoopse Slagenlandschap brings this history to life in the landscape: narrow strips of land are separated by ditches and connected by distinctive bridges.

Gardens and plants in Boskoop

Tuinen van Boskoop is a four-hectare park that grew out of a nursery. It was landscaped with plants and trees supplied by Boskoop growers. Visitors can stroll along all the paths, trails and lawns. The park is free to visit from sunrise to sunset. As park rules may change, it is best to check them before your visit.

Rosarium Boskoop is also part of the town’s historic heritage: it is a Rijksmonument. Plantentuin Esveld has a Japanese maple garden of just under one hectare and a large hydrangea collection. The grounds include a nursery and collection gardens. These botanical attractions add a variety of plant and garden themes to the parkland.

Nursery history and museum

The Boomkwekerijmuseum presents the history of the nursery trade in a nurseryman’s house built in 1870. The house illustrates the home and daily life of a relatively well-to-do nursery family around 1910. A historical tour covers 500 years of nursery history. If you plan to take the tour, check the booking details in advance, as they may change.

The museum is near bicycle junction 96, east of the lifting bridge, and has six charging points for electric bikes. The museum’s location therefore combines insight into local economic history with a link to the cycling network and a listed charging facility for e-bikes.

Lifting bridges and waterways

The three lifting bridges over the Gouwe, including Hefbrug Boskoop, form a unique group and remain largely in their original condition. Hefbrug Boskoop is one of the remarkable structures among these bridges: its design, size and height are characteristic of the lifting bridges over the Gouwe. The bridge has a navigation width of 25 metres and a maximum clearance of 34 metres. In 1936, the bridge in Boskoop over the Gouwe was enlarged to accommodate the increasing size of ships; at the same time, the entrance to the Gouwe was widened.

The Gouwe and Boskoop are part of the Staande-Mastroute between Rotterdam and Amsterdam. The Rijneveldsluis allows boats to enter the polder. Boat tours are offered in the Zuidwijk and Rijneveld polders, passing nurseries where visitors can see them up close. Timetables vary by season, and reservations may change; check tour dates and booking details in advance.

Cycling route and architecture

The “Tuinen en kwekers” cycling route starts at Boskoop station and leads to the gardens of Boskoop-Oost and Reeuwijk. Check route conditions before setting out. The church in Boskoop also offers a distinctive glimpse into the town’s architectural history: after the 1895 fire, it was rebuilt in a restrained yet elegant Neo-Renaissance style.
