Numansdorp offers several specific starting points for planning a trip: local history, historic buildings, walking and cycling routes, and landscapes along the Hollandsch Diep. Which of these shapes your stay depends on whether you are planning more for architecture, outdoor activities or a trip on the water.

Fortress and historic buildings

The beginnings of Fort Buitensluis date to 1793 or 1794, when it was built as an earthwork fort with cannons. It was intended to prevent enemy troops from crossing the Hollandsch Diep. Walking paths on the grounds pass various buildings and offer views of Willemstad and the Haringvlietbrug over the Hollandsch Diep. Here, history and a walk can be enjoyed together, with the paths also taking in the buildings and the views mentioned.

Another historic building is the Nederlands-hervormde Church in Numansdorp. It is a Rijksmonument and a hall church dating from 1653. Its features include a three-sided chancel and a wooden barrel vault with tie beams.

The historic potato storage facility De Stêêne Hut was built in 1947 to store the potato harvest of the Ambachtsheerlijkheid Cromstrijen in dark, cool, dry and frost-free conditions. Prefabricated building elements and the extensive use of concrete mark it as a typical example of post-war reconstruction architecture. The building's purpose and construction tell different stories: the storage conditions explain its practical function, while the building elements and concrete define its architectural character.

Walking and cycling

The Zuiderwaterlinie walking route is 6.9 kilometres long and takes you on a discovery tour through nature, history and culture around Fort Buitensluis. Another walking route with a stated distance is the marked Molenpolderroute, at 6.2 kilometres. This makes it possible to compare the two routes by their stated lengths: the Molenpolderroute is 0.7 kilometres shorter. The Zuiderwaterlinie is also described in terms of its themes, while the Molenpolderroute is presented here in terms of its markings and length.

For cycling, there is the 55-kilometre Zuidfront Vesting Holland route, with 13 information points on the history of the Hoeksche Waard. The information points give the tour a historical focus. At several stops on the Watersnoodwandeling, audio recordings narrated by Guide Dick Holster are available. The activities described therefore differ both in how you get around and in how history is presented along the way: through information points on a cycling route or audio at stops on a walk.

Landscape and waterways

The Oosterse Bekade Gorzen nature area along the Hollandsch Diep includes wild reed beds, open water, channels and creeks, nature outside the dikes, and willow forests. The 60-hectare area around the Rinkelpit was developed in 2009 and 2010 as the Oosterse Bekade Gorzen nature and recreation area. The landscape thus offers a variety of features within one area, from reeds and water to willow forest.

A circular trip with the Deltapontjes offers a different perspective on the region. It passes through Numansdorp, Willemstad, Moerdijk and Strijensas, and can be used for cycling or a long-distance hike. Check ferry availability and departure times before your trip so you can plan your route accordingly.

The town layout also offers some specific points of reference: Numansdorp's central shopping street leads towards the municipal harbour. Other facilities include a marina and a golf course. Alexandershof farm shop offers fresh vegetables and potatoes from its own land, as well as fruit, fresh eggs and organic juice.
