Dirksland Between Polder and Harbor

If you want to get to know Dirksland through its history, an important starting point is 1415: that was when the Dirksland polder was enclosed by a dike. The village of the same name lies in this polder, making it the oldest village on Overflakkee. Here, the landscape and settlement pattern are closely connected; the place name refers not only to a village center, but also to the history of the enclosed land.

Dirksland is one of the so-called key villages. Its historic layout can be read as a key: the Kerkring forms the bow, the Voorstraat the shaft, and the harbor the bit. These three elements offer a vivid picture of the village’s layout. Anyone interested in the development of settlements will find this a distinctive way to explore the village’s history—unlike a mere sequence of dates.

The harbor also tells the story of changes to the landscape. It is 5.5 kilometers long and was repeatedly extended as part of the surrounding land reclamation. This is distinct from the Dirksland harbor canal: it is 5.1 kilometers long and connects the village with the Haringvliet. Together, the harbor and canal offer a tangible glimpse into how waterways and the creation of new land shaped Dirksland’s history.

Historic Dikes and Natural Areas

De Spin consists of four connected historic dikes. These include the Panksdijkje and Sint Christoffeldijk in Sommelsdijk, as well as the Oud-Kraaijerdijk and Onwaardsedijk Noord in Dirksland. You can cycle along the flower-rich historic dikes of De Spin. Rare plants such as agrimony, carline thistle and wild marjoram grow there.

A different landscape awaits you in the Zuiderdiepgorzen nature reserve. Its habitats include muddy banks, wet grasslands and tidal creeks connected to the Zuiderdiep. Birds found there include lapwings, avocets, spoonbills and marsh harriers. You can experience the area from an elevated cycling and walking path. These features offer nature lovers several concrete points of interest: the changing habitats, the waterways and the bird species found there.

For a walk, there are also the flower-rich embankments along the Dirksland harbor canal. The walking route runs along these embankments; De Spin, by contrast, offers the opportunity to cycle along historic dikes. This highlights the difference between the two landscapes: the path by the canal and the collection of dikes with its plants. Another way to experience the Zuiderdiepgorzen is to take in the nature reserve from the elevated cycling and walking path.

Cultural History and Art

Individual buildings and works of art also offer different ways to explore the village’s history. The “De Eendracht” windmill operated commercially as a grain mill until 1966. The artwork “Bietenkaden en Bietenstort” in Dirksland consists of three rust-orange wheelbarrows. Their arrangement represents the motion of dumping sugar beets—a motif already hinted at in the work’s title.

A fresco of Saint Christopher can be found in Dirksland’s Reformed Church. The Christoffel walking route starts and ends at Mozartsingel in Dirksland. These offer two distinct connections to the village’s history: the fresco as a work of art in the church, and the route with its starting and ending point in the village.

Another historical trace leads to the Dirkslandse Sas. It was built in 1790 after silting had made the harbor too shallow for shipping. This connects a specific date with a practical reason: the construction of the sas responded to changing conditions in the harbor. Along with the repeated extensions of the harbor, this story shows how strongly changes have shaped Dirksland’s waterways. Your stay can therefore focus on a variety of themes—from the enclosed polder and the village’s layout to dikes, nature, art and harbor history.
