Goudswaard: Water, Routes and Building History
Accommodation in Goudswaard
When planning a walk, it is also important to take seasonal restrictions into account.
Nature, Water and Routes
The Korendijkse Slikken lie on the south side of Goudswaard. The walking route there passes a birdwatching hide. From the hide, visitors may be able to see geese or spoonbills on the Haringvliet. Because of the breeding season, the route is closed every year from 15 March through 15 July.
The Ontdek Goudswaard walking route runs along the Spui and offers wide views of the water and surrounding nature. It passes the “Hier = Nu” art picnic spot, which serves as a place to rest, and follows the distinctive Karrenspoor through open polder landscape. The Karrenspoor is on the Oude Nieuwlandsedijk. The dike is part of an old polder landscape created through land reclamation in the 16th century.
Costa Del Spui offers walkers a place to rest and look out over the Spui. The WSV Goudswaard marina has 68 berths for members and 15 visitor berths. If you are planning to use a visitor berth on a specific date, check current availability directly with WSV Goudswaard.
Walking and Cycling in the Hoeksche Waard
The wider Hoeksche Waard travel region has a signposted walking network of 470 kilometres; it also offers 300 kilometres of cycling routes. These figures cover regional networks, not the length of any single route in Goudswaard. If you choose a specific route, check its course and current conditions in advance. This will help you plan your walk or cycle ride around the route you have selected.
Historic Architectural Styles
The Hervormde Kerk at Dorpsstraat 19 is a rectangular hall church dating from the 18th century. Its simple tower probably dates from 1721. The Agatha Johannahoeve is also an 18th-century farm. The farmhouse has a gabled roof with a gable-fronted façade; the large brick barn has a hipped roof covered with tiles. On a gabled roof, two sloping roof planes meet at the ridge, while a hipped roof also has sloping roof planes at the gable ends.
The farm at Oudendijk 36 consists of a farmhouse with a curved-neck gable and a Flemish barn with a longitudinal threshing floor. Both parts were built around 1880. The farm is of cultural and historical value as a distinctive example of an agricultural enterprise on the islands of South Holland. The Windlust grain mill in Goudswaard is the oldest grain mill in the Hoeksche Waard.
The dates distinguish the 18th-century Hervormde Kerk and Agatha Johannahoeve from the farm at Oudendijk 36, whose parts date from around 1880. Together with the polder landscape created in the 16th century, these different periods provide a concrete framework for understanding the historic buildings and cultural landscape.
