Zuid-Beijerland is a suitable destination if you would like to include mill history, waterscapes and nature reserves in your plans. Specific places to visit include the Landzigt grain mill, the Tiendgorzen nature reserve on the Haringvliet and the island of Tiengemeten. Walking and cycling routes pass through varied landscapes and historic sites.

Landzigt and the history of the grain mill

The Landzigt grain mill was built in 1857 on Molendijk in Zuid-Beijerland. It replaced a wooden post mill for grinding grain. Landzigt is therefore a specific example of grain processing in the area.

The mill is also associated with a product by name: Landzigt grinds Hitserts Volkoren Tarwemeel in its own mill. The product is made entirely from wheat grown and harvested in Zuid-Beijerland. Landzigt thus brings together the history of the building, the former type of mill and a specifically named grain product.

Tiendgorzen and the birdlife of Tiengemeten

Tiendgorzen lies on the Haringvliet next to the ferry to the island of Tiengemeten. While waiting for the ferry, you can walk straight into the nature reserve. The rare northern vole lives there. Reed-dwelling and wading birds are often spotted, including the reed warbler and the redshank.

In 2006, Tiengemeten was transformed from agricultural land into a nature reserve, and it lies along the migration route of many bird species. The peace, open space and water attract tens of thousands of birds. The island is also a walking island with several hiking routes. You can get tips and rent bicycles at the visitor centre; check the bicycle rental service in advance, as visitor services may change.

Walks and routes through the landscape

In the Zuid-Beijerlandse Bos, you can walk through the forest and along the banks of the Borrekeen. Several routes also include Zuid-Beijerland and its surroundings, but each has a different focus. The De Drie Beijerlanden cycling route passes through Zuid-Beijerland and by historic farmhouses and distinctive mills. It also runs along numerous dikes, fields and creeks.

The Tiengemetenroute passes through Oud-Beijerland, Nieuw-Beijerland and Zuid-Beijerland; in Zuid-Beijerland, it uses the ferry to Tiengemeten. The Rondje Oud-Beijerland en Tiengemeten runs along the Zuid-Beijerlandse Bos and passes Landzigt, a grain mill built in 1857. When comparing the routes, you can therefore use the named landmarks as a guide: one description highlights farmhouses, mills and open countryside, while the other explicitly mentions the ferry connection to Tiengemeten.

Hitsertse Kade and getting to Tiendgorzen

At Hitsertse Kade stands Tureluur, a 10-metre-high observation tower. Kayaks and canoes can be temporarily moored at the landing stage there. Hitsertse Kade is a day recreation area with a designated swimming zone in the Vuile Gat. Check the current status of the swimming zone before your visit.

A ferry runs daily between Nieuwendijk and Tiengemeten. Check the timetable before planning your trip. The best way to reach Tiendgorzen is by car: take the Numansdorp/Zuid-Beijerland exit on the A29 between Rotterdam and Zierikzee. Then follow the signs to Zuid-Beijerland and the ferry connection to Tiengemeten. For your navigation system, use Nieuwendijk 1, 3284 KR Zuid-Beijerland.
