Discover Middelharnis
Accommodation in Middelharnis
Anyone looking for a hotel in Middelharnis can tailor their stay to different interests: nature trails, the harbor and Haringvliet, play facilities, local history or art. The following examples show how these highlights differ—from paths through the polder landscape to the history of the Oude Raadhuis.
Harbor and waterside paths
The harbor canal at Middelharnis’s harbor basin connects the town directly to Haringvliet. The green quays around the harbor basin are ideal for walks by the water. Anyone setting out from Middelharnis on Haringvliet in a sailboat, canoe or motorboat must first pass the harborhead. The harborhead is therefore a shared landmark for all three of these types of boat. The Menheerse Werf serves a different purpose: it is one of the starting points for the canoe map by WNF and Ark Rewilding Nederland. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between a walk on land, a trip on the water and the starting point for the canoe map.
Nature and outdoor activities
De Vliegers is located in a wooded polder landscape between Nieuwe-Tonge, Middelharnis and Stad aan ’t Haringvliet. A designated walking and cycling path runs through forests, green fields and areas rich in water. The area is accessible year-round for walking and cycling along the paths; there is also an equestrian trail. It is partially accessible to wheelchair users. The different uses help you identify the focus of a visit; wheelchair accessibility is explicitly partial.
The uninhabited bird island of Bliek lies off the coast of Middelharnis. It was created specifically in 2018 as a safe and peaceful nesting site for birds. Fish spawn in the shallow areas around the island. Bliek therefore has two ecological functions: a nesting site for birds and spawning grounds in the shallow areas.
Natuurspeeltuin Atlantia, next to Middelharnis’s harborhead, offers a different kind of activity. It has wooden play structures integrated into the natural surroundings. Children can climb over tree trunks, balance on ropes above the water and crawl through hidden tunnels. This makes the playground different from a walk along the green quays: here, movement and play are the focus.
Local history and art
The Oude Raadhuis van Middelharnis was designed and built in 1639 in the Dutch Classical style. A copper gaff-rigged ship sits atop the small tower; it symbolizes Middelharnis’s original roots as a fishing settlement. Architecture and seafaring are both important to understanding the building: the Classical style describes its architectural language, while the ship points to its origins as a fishing town.
Atelier in d’Egelantier belongs to the artist Annette de Roo and serves as both a shop and a studio. Visitors can view her varied works there; lessons and workshops are also offered. Art lovers can choose between viewing the works and taking part in the lessons or workshops on offer.
