Oude-Tonge between the mill, memorial sites and water
Accommodation in Oude-Tonge
In Oude-Tonge, the focus is on buildings, memorial sites, routes by the water and regional food culture. These different themes offer concrete ways to get a sense of the place before your trip.
Buildings and local history
The “De Korenbloem” mill is a round brick mill dating from 1748 and is capable of milling. It combines a distinctive architectural form with a long history. If you would like to include the milling operation in your plans, check before your trip whether a suitable date is available.
The Ned. Hervormde Kerk, a large late Gothic village church, stands at Kerkring 1. The settlement pattern is also part of the historic village scene: Oude-Tonge is one of the villages of the Vorstraat type characteristic of Goeree-Overflakkee. In this type, a street usually runs at right angles to the dike and often ends at a square with a church. This lets you consider individual buildings, such as the mill and church, alongside the broader structure of the village.
Memorial sites and historic routes
The war memorial in Oude-Tonge commemorates American pilot Robert E. Stover, who died near Oude-Tonge on July 30, 1943. It consists of a natural stone plinth bearing a twisted propeller blade. Its design thus incorporates a specific element associated with the pilot’s memory.
Another chapter in history is the 1953 North Sea flood. Oude-Tonge had the highest number of casualties, with more than 300 residents caught by surprise by the water at night. The “Watersnoodramp Oude-Tonge” route passes several memorial monuments. The war memorial recalls an event from 1943, while the route focuses on the memory of the 1953 flood disaster. This distinction in dates helps place the memorial sites in context.
There is also the “Podwalk Oude-Tonge,” a GPS-guided audio tour that you can download via an app. Its format differs from the walking and cycling routes: here, the focus is on an audio tour.
Havenkanaal, nature and tours
The Havenkanaal is a waterway connecting the village to the Krammer. Wild orchids grow along its banks, and the area also provides a habitat for waterbirds and meadow birds. The canal is therefore both a landscape feature and a natural habitat. The port of Oude-Tonge lies on the boundary between fresh and salt water, adding another specific feature to the waterscape.
For a walk, the “Havenkanaal Oude-Tonge” route follows the port and the Havenkanaal. The “Havenkanaal Oude-Tonge - Ooltgensplaat” cycling route starts at bicycle junction 92 in Oude-Tonge. The details differ depending on how you travel: the walking route is described as following the port and canal, while the cycling route has a specific starting point. You can therefore start by choosing whether you would like to explore the area on foot or by bicycle.
