Oud-Beijerland: Historic Centre, Harbour and Historic Routes
Accommodation in Oud-Beijerland
When looking for a hotel in Oud-Beijerland, you can first decide what you want to focus on: the historic centre and its architecture, a walk, or nature destinations in the Hoeksche Waard. This makes it easier to plan your stay around the places and activities that interest you.
Architecture and history in the historic centre
In the heart of Oud-Beijerland, the Oude Raadhuis, a historic building dating from the 17th century, stands on the Vliet. It has been a Rijksmonument since 1966. The Oude Raadhuis is also home to the Inspiratiepunt Hoeksche Waard. It provides information about places of interest, walking and cycling routes, and activities in the Hoeksche Waard.
The walk through the historic centre is 2.8 kilometres long and takes about 45 to 60 minutes. Along the way, it gives you an impression of several monumental buildings. A walking route from the Historische Vereniging Oud-Beijerland starts on the bridge in front of the Oude Raadhuis at Waterstal 1. The “Ontdek Oud-Beijerland I” route passes the Jewish memorial “Am j’Israel Chai” on the Bierkade.
The harbour is also part of the townscape: it lies right in the centre and is surrounded by characteristic houses and ornate façades. The prosperity generated by trade, agriculture and fishing can still be seen today in the stately mansions along the Vliet and on the Havendam. The Dorpskerk is considered Oud-Beijerland’s oldest and best-known church. The Rooms-Katholieke Kerk has been a municipal monument since 2004. The Carel Wüst Museum displays 38 classic and modern classic cars.
Nature destinations and routes in the Hoeksche Waard
The Klein Profijt visitor centre is set amid greenery in an area outside the dikes. From here, you can start exploring the Hoeksche Waard National Landscape. The centre has permanent and temporary exhibitions about the region’s flora and fauna. A terrace offers views of the Oude Maas; Klein Profijt also has a youth room and a Kabouterpad (gnome trail) in its garden and willow coppice woodland.
The “Klein Profijt De Staart” route starts at the nature visitor centre car park. It runs through the De Staart nature area and willow coppice woodland, among other places. At TOP De Oude Tol, you can park your car and follow signposted or described cycling and walking routes through the countryside. The De Oude Tol recreation area in Oud-Beijerland has a nature playground and a bathing beach.
Events and practical information
Many events take place in the centre of Oud-Beijerland, including markets such as Spuidag, Jaarmarkt and the Kerstmarkt “op de Winterse Sferen”. The events programme may change. If a particular market is important to your trip, check its date in advance.
There are several secure bicycle parking facilities in the centre. Bus stops are within walking distance of shops, restaurants and the weekly market. As local access options may change, check the latest information about bicycle parking before you travel.
The Rhoonsveer is a ferry for cyclists and pedestrians. It connects Oud-Beijerland with Rhoon and Spijkenisse across the Spui at two locations. The ferry operates year-round except during the Christmas holidays. If you plan to use the service, check the latest operating times before travelling.
