Rozenburg brings together a distinctive waterside landscape, wildlife and gardens, and the history of its mills and village. When choosing where to stay, you can decide whether you would primarily like to explore the Landtong, get to know the animals or learn about the history of the village. Each destination has its own focus—from flowers and nesting birds to an exhibition about old Rozenburg.

Landtong Rozenburg between two waterways

The Landtong Rozenburg is a peninsula between the Calandkanaal and the Nieuwe Waterweg, and forms part of Rozenburg’s green belt. The area covers 54 hectares and is rich in flowers, insects and nesting birds. The water and nature together shape the landscape here.

The area can be reached by car and explored by bike or on foot along its informal paths. A 16-metre-high observation tower stands on the Landtong. Information panels around the tower point out what you can see and experience. You can focus your visit on the views or make the paths the main part of your exploration.

The “De Vink” observation tower is 15 metres high and was built in 2015. From the tower, you can see across the Landtong Rozenburg and part of the Port of Rotterdam. The views bring together the Landtong’s landscape and a glimpse of part of the port area.

Animals, gardens and nature experiences

The De Beestenboel city farm is on the edge of Rozenburg. Visitors can learn about animals and nature there in a fun, hands-on way. The animals include pigs, cows, goats and rabbits. Visitors can also go into the bee house and look inside a real beehive. This makes a visit to the city farm different from exploring nature on the Landtong: here, the focus is on animals and a close-up look inside the bee house.

Free activities are held regularly at De Beestenboel, including the Lentefeest, mini-Jeugdland and the Schaapscheerfeest. The dates of individual events may change, so check the date in advance if you are planning to visit for a particular festival.

The Dorpstuin Rozenburg adds a gardening dimension to the nature offerings: it is an orchard with flower and vegetable gardens. Rozenburg therefore offers different aspects of nature side by side—the plants and birdlife of the Landtong, animals at the city farm, and fruit, flowers and vegetables in the garden.

Mills and the history of old Rozenburg

De Hoop at Molenweg 30 is a round brick smock mill and grain mill, built in 1887. Its design and function as a grain mill give a visit a tangible architectural and practical connection to milling.

Next to the mill, at Molenweg 28, the Oudheidkamer is housed in the miller’s cottage. An exhibition about old Rozenburg is on display there from Koningsdag until early December. The exhibition period may change, so check the specific dates if you are planning your visit around it.

The “Schotten & Scheuren” route also includes De Hoop and leads to the Oudheidkamer in Rozenburg’s former miller’s house. Among other events, the Historical Association Oud Rozenburg gives slide presentations featuring old photos of Rozenburg. Alongside the surviving buildings, these offer a look at historic views of the village.

The Immanuelkerk at Kerkweg 24 was built as a plain Expressionist cruciform church with a tower on its façade. Another link to the past can be found on what is now Zandweg, where part of the connecting road has been preserved.
