When planning your stay in Oostvoorne, it helps to consider the area’s different themes: dunes, a tidal coast, historic sites and routes. Each place has its own appeal, from rare plants to medieval remains.

Dunes and a tidal coast

The Duinen van Oostvoorne nature reserve covers 264 hectares and has marked walking and cycling routes. Rare plants grow in its damp dune valleys, including marsh germander. In the Netherlands, this species is found only on Voorne-Putten. The area therefore combines opportunities for walking and cycling with distinctive plant life.

The Slikken van Voorne offer a different landscape. Tides shape this dynamic coastal area; new channels and sandbanks are part of its changing character. The Slikken are also a quiet refuge for seals and birds, and are suitable for walking and birdwatching. Those interested in the coast can observe both its tide-shaped features and the area’s importance as a habitat.

History in a ruin, a park forest and a museum

Burcht van Oostvoorne is a medieval ruin in the centre of Oostvoorne. The remains of a residential tower dating from the 13th century have survived. Its historical significance is therefore tied directly to a specific place in the centre.

Landgoed Mildenburg represents a different form of cultural heritage: the 30-hectare estate is in Oostvoorne, and straight avenues divide its historic park forest. The estate also has a 2-kilometre route that can be requested free of charge. Burcht and Mildenburg have distinct characters: one is a ruin with a medieval residential tower, while the other is a park forest structured by avenues.

Biberbunker is also part of Oostvoorne. The German command bunker from the Second World War is now a museum. Visits are possible by reservation or on request.

Routes with different points of interest

The Oostvoorne mountain biking route follows Oostvoorne’s old coastline and passes through Geuzenbos. Betoverend Oostvoorne is 13.3 kilometres long and takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes. Landgoed Mildenburg has a 2-kilometre route that can be requested free of charge. The different distances give a sense of scale: Mildenburg offers the shorter route, while Betoverend Oostvoorne covers a longer distance and includes an approximate time.

Beach and finding your way around the dune area

The beach on the north side of Oostvoornse Meer is one of the lake’s two bathing water locations. Its hard lakebed provides excellent visibility, making the beach popular with divers and surfers. The area therefore appeals both to swimmers and to people interested in water sports.

From TOP Oostvoorne, you can explore the Voorne dune area. When planning the nature-focused parts of your stay, you can consider this starting point alongside the coastal and route themes; the landscapes and activities described offer a range of different points of interest.
