Nieuwerkerk Aan Den Ijssel: Park Hitland and History
Accommodation in Nieuwerkerk Aan Den Ijssel
Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel can be viewed from different perspectives: Park Hitland lies between Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel and Capelle aan den IJssel; traces of historic windmills and structures sit alongside themes from the history of the landscape and waterways. If you’re planning a stay at a hotel in Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel, these offer different points of interest, from outdoor activities to history and waterways.
Park Hitland and Its Routes
Park Hitland is a recreational area of around 250 hectares, with a rural, open character, between Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel and Capelle aan den IJssel. The area has various walking and cycling routes, including signposted walking routes. This distinction can be useful when planning your trip: if you’d like to explore on foot, you can follow the signposted walking routes; cycling routes offer another option. The rural, open character provides a different emphasis from historic structures and collections.
Landscape and Past Land Use
Peat extraction in the area around Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel created large lakes, making the town resemble a kind of island surrounded by water. In the wider region, the Zuidplaspolder was drained in 1841. The formation of the lakes describes the town’s earlier landscape, while the drainage reflects the broader regional landscape: two different historical scales come together here. The Steenovens in Groot Hitland probably date from the first half of the 19th century. The foundation of the former Essemolen windmill is visible in Park Hitland. The public foundation was preserved in connection with the construction of a cycling path and designed as a picnic area.
Windmills and Structures
The wooden Ophaalbrug at the end of Dorpsstraat in the town center dates from the 19th century and connects to Oosterringdijk. On May 20, 2005, the Windlust was put back into operation as a wind-powered grain mill for the second time in its history. The bridge highlights the built connection, while the windmill date marks the resumption of its use.
Waterways and Local History
Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel is one of the stops on the waterway route between the Rotte and the Hollandsche IJssel. Along the route, water sports enthusiasts pass operable bridges and locks; several have waiting areas for convoys. In 2024, the municipality of Zuidplas installed jetties in the Ringvaart to make it possible to visit the village centers, as well as several waiting and passing places at bridges. If you’re planning a trip, check the current operating status of the bridges and locks in advance.
The Oudheidkamer now contains more than 10,000 objects. Since 1992, it has been housed in the barn of the 17th-century “Nooit-Gedacht” farmhouse at ’s-Gravenweg 6a.
