At La Brea Pitch Lake in southwest Trinidad, an unusual landscape comes into view: liquid bitumen rises to the surface across 40 hectares and cools into natural asphalt. Pitch Lake is considered the world’s largest phenomenon of its kind. Here, the geological process and the landscape it creates are closely linked—a very different impression from Trinidad’s coast.

Pitch Lake and Coastal Scenery

The figure of 40 hectares describes the area where bitumen reaches the surface and turns into natural asphalt. Those interested in geology will find a striking example of this transition from liquid material to a solid surface at La Brea Pitch Lake. Its designation as the largest phenomenon of its kind also makes the site a distinctive natural feature of the island.

Maracas Bay shows another side of Trinidad: the beach lies on the mountainous north coast, its shore is lined with palm trees, and the surf is strong. The combination of coastline, palms and choppy water defines the beach’s character. Trinidad therefore offers contrasting travel interests: a geological natural feature in the southwest and a coastal scene in the north.

Carnival, Birdwatching and Hummingbirds

The grand street parade on Carnival Monday and Carnival Tuesday is the highlight of Trinidad Carnival. The festivities begin shortly after Christmas and end on Ash Wednesday; the exact dates vary from year to year. When planning, it is therefore the Carnival period for that year—not a fixed calendar date—that matters.

A guided boat tour through the Caroni Swamp, home of the national bird, the Scarlet Ibis, offers the opportunity to watch birds. Check current availability with an operator before planning. A sunset boat tour through the Caroni Bird Sanctuary includes a three-course menu and non-alcoholic drinks on board. Check current availability and arrangements with the operator for this as well.

Yerette in Maracas Valley offers another way to observe nature: a visit provides an up-close view of 14 hummingbird species year-round. Check current visitor arrangements before planning. Birdwatching in the Caroni Swamp and hummingbird viewing at Yerette offer different experiences; both put Trinidad’s birdlife in the spotlight.

Roti and Local Cuisine

Roti is an Indian flatbread filled with vegetables or spiced meat and is considered popular in Trinidad. The two fillings offer a simple choice between a vegetable option and one with spiced meat. This specific dish adds a taste of the island to its nature and cultural experiences.

In the wider destination of Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago is an archipelagic country in the southern Caribbean, northeast of Venezuela and south of Grenada. The country covers 5,128 square kilometres and consists of the two main islands of Trinidad and Tobago, along with 21 smaller islands. Trinidad is the larger and more populous of the two main islands. The annual Great Race links them: the speedboat race starts in Trinidad and ends in Tobago.

On Tobago, the Main Ridge Forest Reserve is a distinctive natural feature. It covers 3,958 hectares of tropical rainforest, including lower montane rainforest, lowland rainforest and xerophytic rainforest. The Main Ridge runs lengthwise across about two-thirds of Tobago; the British established the reserve in 1776. Its rainforest provides a habitat for the rare White-tailed Sabrewing (Campylopterus ensipennis), which is endemic to Tobago.

Buccoo Reef is also on Tobago. Tropical fish and a colourful coral reef define its underwater world, which can be explored by glass-bottom boat or on a dive. Check current availability with operators before your trip. The wider destination of Trinidad and Tobago also includes Rio Seco Waterfall on the island of Trinidad. It is about 30 feet high and forms a large, deep pool at its base where swimming is possible. Water conditions can vary, so take them into account on site.
