Tavuki: Village Culture and History on Tavuki Bay
Accommodation in Tavuki
Tavuki lies on the shore of Tavuki Bay. As the chiefly village of the Tavuki Bay Community, it serves as a center within the community for traditional, church, and government activities. This connects the village’s location on the bay with its central role in the community.
Community and Traditional Roles
At traditional events of the Tavuki Bay Community, the chief, Tui Tavuki, is addressed first; he drinks the first bowl of kava (yaqona). The first address and the first bowl of kava mark two parts of the same community process.
Tavuki is also the seat of the paramount chiefs of Nacolase. They are the traditional leaders of a confederation of 22 villages. Nacolase is Tavuki’s traditional Cavuti. Tavuki and Yawe have a relationship described as vitabani (“sides”). The terms refer to different contexts: Cavuti describes Nacolase’s traditional role for Tavuki, while vitabani describes the relationship between Tavuki and Yawe.
Village Green, Church, and Handicrafts
Historically, the chiefs’ houses were arranged more or less around a central village green where ceremonies took place. Large, old earth-house foundations remain in Tavuki. The green and the foundations offer different insights into the village’s former layout.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Sunday afternoon services in Tavuki Bay were often held in the large church in Tavuki village. People from seven villages attended; attendance could reach the low hundreds. Another historic moment was the visit of the Duke of Edinburgh: in March 1971, he entered Tavuki’s village green.
Women in Tavuki weave mats, baskets, and fans. This craft adds another aspect of the village’s cultural character alongside traditional leadership and church gatherings.
Getting There and Accommodation
The Tavuki Bay Community is a 10- to 15-minute boat ride from the government station in Vunisea. This is a general reference for the community; check current boat transport arrangements in advance for your specific trip.
In the wider area around the destination, in April 2025, Mereoni Vuase operated a homestay in Namuana Village, Tavuki, for tourists and local travelers, including officials visiting Kadavu Island. If you are considering this type of accommodation, check its current availability before your trip.
Kadavu Province as the Wider Context
In the wider destination of Kadavu Province, Kadavu is an archipelago comprising Ono, Buliya, Yaukuve, and other islands, many of which are uninhabited. The Great Astrolabe Reef protects the islands. Some resorts in Kadavu Province offer guests the opportunity to dive and snorkel with large, gentle manta rays. This regional context adds the wider island setting to your orientation in Tavuki, without equating those activities with the village.
