Treasure Island – Reefs, Wildlife and Culture
Accommodation in Treasure Island
Treasure Island is shaped by the protection of its reefs and wildlife, as well as guided experiences at sea. These are complemented by regular opportunities to learn about Fijian culture. If you are considering Treasure Island as a destination, these highlights can help you align your interests with your travel plans.
Reefs and Wildlife
The reef system around Nakelo Treasure was designated a tabu area, or no-take zone, in 1996 to protect coral reefs and the marine life that depends on them. While snorkelling around Treasure Island, you can see coral nurseries. The sea is also the focus of guided excursions that showcase the underwater world from different perspectives.
Hawksbill turtles live and nest on the island. Treasure Island has its own sea turtle rehabilitation centre, which opened on 7 September 2026. Nakelo Treasure is also home to a wild breeding population of endangered Fijian crested iguanas. Visitors can hand-feed resident iguanas fresh hibiscus flowers. Banded rails and Fijian shining parrots also thrive on Treasure Island; both species are described as endangered.
Guided Water Experiences
Activities include guided snorkelling safaris in the waters around the island. Guided night snorkelling tours let you observe marine life after dark. There are also two tours with different stated durations: the Reef Trolling Tour lasts two hours, while the sport fishing charter lasts four hours. You can factor in the duration of these two activities when planning your days.
Glass-bottom boat trips are offered regularly, and you can also feed the fish. Visitors can also take part in coral planting when planting activities are taking place. If you are interested, check in advance whether a planting activity is scheduled during your stay.
Culture and Special Occasions
A Fijian Night is held weekly on Treasure Island. It includes a traditional lovo buffet, with a demonstration of how food is cooked in an earth oven. Making traditional Fijian handicrafts is also part of the evening. Talks about traditional plant medicine are also regularly offered to visitors. These recurring activities give you specific cultural highlights to consider when planning, without requiring you to plan around a special event date.
The Little Treasures Kids Club gives children hands-on experiences with Fijian culture. Sigavou Beach Chapel is a beach wedding venue on Treasure Island. So, alongside nature and water activities, the island also offers culturally focused experiences and a designated wedding venue.
Plan Your Journey
Boat transfers to Nakelo Treasure Island Resort are operated by South Sea Cruises from Port Denarau. There is also a dedicated helipad, and arrival by seaplane is another option. These options differ by mode of transport. Before your trip, check the latest boat transfer departure information and factor your journey into your stay plans.
If you are planning excursions, the stated tour durations and the condition that coral planting depends on an activity taking place are useful details to keep in mind as you plan your trip.
