Savusavu combines a location on the shores of Savusavu Bay with hot springs in the center and activities on the water. The bay formed in the caldera of a volcano. Hot water and steam have been emerging from Nakama Hot Springs for centuries. If you’re looking for a hotel in Savusavu, this combination can help you choose what to focus on during your trip: coastal scenery, geothermal features and maritime activities are different aspects of the same destination.

The Bay, Hot Springs and Character of the Town

Savusavu is considered a tourism hub on the island’s south coast and a relaxed destination. Natural hot springs, diving, sailing and the chance to unwind are also part of its appeal. These different highlights can help you decide what you’d like to focus on during your trip: time on the coast, experiences on the water or the geothermal feature in the town center.

Getting There and Getting Around

Savusavu is an official yacht port of entry in Fiji and offers the required quarantine, health, immigration and customs formalities. For travel from Suva, Goundar Shipping’s timetable lists an overnight ferry service between the two towns; Monday and Friday are listed as departure days for the outbound journey. Ferry schedules can change, so check current departures before you travel.

Patterson Brothers Shipping operates the Searoad Service, with buses running from Suva’s bus station to the center of Savusavu. There is also a route of about six kilometers from town, mostly flat, along the road toward Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort. The distance gives you an idea of the length and direction of this stretch.

Experiences in the Bay and Nearby

Kayaking is one way to explore the coast of Savusavu. Equipment and tour operators may not always be available. In Savusavu Bay, you can snorkel at Split Rock, Lighthouse, David’s Point and Nuggets. Nearby Namena Marine Reserve can be reached with dive operators and liveaboards based in Savusavu.

Nawi Island Marina is also close to the destination: it is in the sheltered waters of Savusavu Bay and a short boat ride from Savusavu. From there, visitors are connected with local markets, resorts and cultural experiences. The marina and the snorkeling spots offer different perspectives on the bay, from its sheltered harbor to named locations beneath the water.

Another option nearby is the tour at J. Hunter’s pearl farm. The farm is a five-minute boat ride from Savusavu. The tour starts with a 15-minute presentation about cultured pearls, then continues by glass-bottom boat to the underwater farm, where you can see the oyster cultivation. Snorkeling is optional. During the 40-minute ride, you’ll see pearl oysters at different stages of growth: they hang on 200-meter-long lines, three to five meters below the sea surface. At a cleaning platform, you can watch workers clean and inspect young and adult oysters.
