Malevu on Naviti Island: Village Accommodation and Activities
Accommodation in Malevu
Malevu on Naviti Island combines village accommodation with activities that may be arranged for guests depending on the host. The village accommodation consists of complete private houses, not bures. Qeleni is one of the sister accommodations in Malevu.
Accommodation and Arrival in the Village
There is no vehicle traffic in the village accommodation area. On arrival in Malevu, all visitors must present a sevusevu to the village chief. Check local customs with your host before travelling so you can include this welcome in your arrival plans.
Possible Activities for Guests
A complimentary village tour may be offered to guests staying in the village accommodation on arrival, depending on the host, availability and weather. Hikes may also be possible under these conditions. If either activity is important to your plans, it is best to arrange it with your host in advance.
Possible cultural activities include authentic Fijian meke dances, which guests may be able to watch and join in, depending on the host, availability and weather. Evening and nighttime kava sessions may also be offered to guests under the same conditions. These activities depend on your stay and the individual hosts.
Depending on the host, availability and weather, guests may also be able to join rugby games with local boys and men. Another possible activity is spear fishing with traditional spearguns; the same conditions apply. A full-body massage from women in the village may be available to guests, depending on availability.
Kayaks and surfboards may be available by the water, depending on the host, availability and weather. Under these conditions, guests can also hire a boat for deep-sea fishing or trips to more remote snorkelling spots. If you are interested in any of these offerings, ask in advance what can be arranged during your stay.
Getting to the Village Accommodation
When travelling on the Yasawa Flyer, the drop-off point for the villages of Qeleni, Vatia, Vaturua and Waitauvou in Malevu is at Barefoot Manta Island Resort. The red Tavewa Seabus ferry also provides access to the village accommodation in Malevu. The crossing from Lautoka Wharf on Viti Levu to the Yasawas takes less than three hours. Check the current timetable, travel time and drop-off point before travelling, as ferry services and drop-off arrangements may change.
Manta Rays in the Nearby Area
A manta ray channel is located nearby on Naviti Island and is visited by tourists during the cooler months. A 2013 marine survey recorded an average of two mantas per trip there; at least 14 individual animals were identified as returning. These historical observations may not reflect current conditions. Seasonal animal presence and visitor numbers may also vary.
