Ongojou lies inland at a pass that cuts through the mountain ranges. When looking for a hotel, this location helps place the destination geographically. Other points of interest include a historic cultural project about the village’s history and a report on mountain bike tours planned around Ongojou.

Village stories as a cultural project

As part of the “C’est mon patrimoine!” project documented in the 2019 heritage programme, 20 young people from Ongojou collected, wrote and performed five traditional stories. They told of the village’s origins and the central role of the well and water. Together with street artist Seb Toussaint, the young people created five murals in public spaces. The project combines the collection, writing and performance of traditional stories with another artistic form. For guests interested in local culture, both the village’s origins and the importance of wells and water, as well as the collaborative artistic work, are key aspects.

Mountain bike tours: a report from 2023

According to a report from 2023, Mayotte VTT offered guided mountain bike tours around Ongojou: they took place on weekends by reservation, and during the week as part of group events. Three levels were planned, from beginner to expert. The project was planned for the area around Ongojou. The information brings together two practical questions for planning: which level you would like to take into account and what time slot is envisaged. If such a tour is of interest to you, check before travelling whether it is currently available and which of the stated reservation conditions apply. The mural project is part of the village’s history; the mountain bike tours, by contrast, are described as a planned initiative in a 2023 report and should therefore be considered differently in terms of timing when planning your trip.

Dembeni: nature and cultural heritage in the wider destination

The wider destination of Dembeni offers additional nature and cultural history themes. The Îlots de Dembéni, also known as the Îlots Hajangoua, comprise Pouhou, Pengoua and Kolo Issa. Pouhou is a small rocky islet and a nesting site for the white-tailed tropicbird, the only seabird that breeds on Mayotte. The population is estimated at around 100 pairs. Pengoua and Kolo Issa, by contrast, are elongated and connected by the fringing reef. The islands can thus be distinguished by their shape and by the natural significance of Pouhou. In Hajangoua, the remains of a sugar factory and its tall chimneys bear witness to the agricultural past of the commune of Dembéni. Trails in Dembéni pass the remains of former sugar factories and continue as far as Iloni Beach. Two different perspectives can therefore help put Dembeni into context: the wildlife of the Îlots and evidence of the agricultural past along the trails to the beach.
