On the Isle of Pines, you can plan your excursions around a range of interests: a traditional canoe trip, snorkelling, a guided tour or a visit to a cave. The activities differ both in subject and in the kind of experience they offer. Upi Bay, Oro Natural Pool and the various tours each have their own focus.

Water experiences and cave visits

Upi Bay is in the southeast of the Isle of Pines. There, visitors can take a ride in a traditional outrigger canoe accompanied by a local piroguier. The know-how involved in making these canoes has been passed down from generation to generation. At Upi Bay, two aspects of the same experience come together: a ride in a traditional canoe and a practice handed down over time.

Oro Natural Pool offers a different focus: it is a place to relax and observe tropical fish with a mask, fins and snorkel. When choosing between these water experiences, consider whether you would prefer to travel in a canoe with a local piroguier or spend time relaxing and watching fish.

Oumagne Cave, better known as Queen Hortense Cave, is in the north of the Isle of Pines. For Third Cave, access is an important point to consider when planning: the drive follows a long, narrow forest track, and the ground up to the entrance is very uneven. Check local access conditions, especially in wet weather.

Island tours with different focuses

Kuu-Oro Transport offers tours of the natural and cultural sights of the Isle of Pines. Departures are possible from the wharf or the airfield; reservations are recommended. Neutomo Excursions offers guided island tours by minibus, introducing the island’s myths and legends. The stated focuses differ: Kuu-Oro centres on natural and cultural sights, while Neutomo offers a guided tour featuring stories about myths and legends.

The type of transport may also be an important factor in your planning: one tour lists its departure points, while the other specifies a minibus and a thematic focus. If you are interested in the island’s traditional stories, Neutomo’s focus is explicitly stated. If you plan to go with Kuu-Oro, bear in mind that reservations are recommended.

Excursions with local tastings

Day or half-day excursions to the Moro and Brosse islets from Kuto and/or Kanuméra bays include tastings of local products. A typical lunch includes lobster, lagoon fish, cassava fries and coconut rice; menus may vary. The duration information also helps you choose between a full-day and a half-day excursion.

Getting there and practical planning

For almost fifteen years, the Betico 2 has provided a sea connection between Nouméa, the Isle of Pines and the Loyalty Islands. When planning your trip, check the timetable for your intended date. This lets you take the sea connection into account alongside your planned excursions without confusing the tours with one another.

Different practical considerations apply to cave visits and tours: for Third Cave, check local access conditions, especially in wet weather. Kuu-Oro recommends making a reservation. These tips complement your choice of excursion and help you tailor your travel plans to the activities you have in mind.
