Le Mont-Dore offers a range of themes to explore: at Village de Prony, the preserved traces of the penal colony take centre stage, alongside historic trails, forest landscapes and viewpoints, the thermal springs of Prony, and seasonal whale watching. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on heritage, hiking, scenery or a nature experience available at a particular time of year. Each site offers its own perspective on these interests.

Heritage at Village de Prony

Village de Prony bears witness to the history of New Caledonia’s penal colony. The former Camp Sébert has preserved the old bread oven, the powder magazine, the timber sled and the officers’ quarters. These traces range from structural remains to an object used to transport timber, making the history of the former camp tangible.

The Sentier de la Pénitentiaire leads to Village de Prony and to historic remains of the penal colony dating from the early 20th century. The Sentier de l’îlot Casy also includes penal-colony remains, among them a former cultivation area and a cemetery with a few graves. Guided tours of Village de Prony led by a heritage guide are regularly organised. Check the latest arrangements before your trip.

Trails through forest and history

Village de Prony is also the starting point of the seven-stage GR NC 1 long-distance hiking trail. The Sentiers des Bois du Sud offer a different focus: they pass through a former forestry site with humid forest. Trees found there include Chêne-gomme, Houp and Kaori. The trail therefore highlights both the area’s former use and its vegetation.

Take water with you when hiking at higher elevations in the Bois du Sud, as there are no water points there. Check the latest practical trail information before setting out. The Sentier du Cap N'Dua also offers a distinct route: it connects the car park at Cap N'Dua with Anse Majic and passes over the summit of Cap N'Dua and by the lighthouse that regulates navigation in Havannah Channel. Mountain biking is associated with Creek Pernod and the Boucles de Netcha.

Viewpoints and scenery

The viewpoints each offer a different panorama. The Sentiers du Mont-Dore provide views over the Grand Sud and Nouméa. From the viewpoint at the Cap N'Dua lighthouse, you can look out over the southern lagoon; in clear weather, Île des Pins can also be seen in the distance. The Crève-Coeur viewpoint at Col de Prony offers a panorama of the Champ de bataille and Baie de la Somme. Depending on the scenery you want to see, you can take in views of the Grand Sud and Nouméa, the southern lagoon, or the Champ de bataille and Baie de la Somme.

Plan seasonal experiences

Humpback whales can be seen in the commune of Le Mont-Dore, at Prony or Cap N'Dua, from mid-July to mid-September. Dates can vary from year to year, so check the specific dates for your trip. During this period, the jetty at Baie de la Somme serves as a departure point for whale-watching trips and excursions to ĂŽlot Casy. Check the condition of the jetty before your trip as well.

The thermal springs of Prony at Baie des Kaoris have a deck, a jetty and picnic tables. They offer a different focus for a visit than the historic trails and viewpoints. Together with forest trails, heritage and seasonal whale watching, they provide a range of themes to choose from when planning your trip.
