Parakai: Thermal Pools and Skydiving
Accommodation in Parakai
Parakai has two distinct attractions: thermal bathing at Kaipātiki Hot Springs and skydiving at West Auckland Airport. Each activity comes with its own details and conditions.
Thermal bathing at Kaipātiki Hot Springs
Kaipātiki Hot Springs is a thermal bathing and wellness destination in Parakai. The water is naturally heated, and swimming is available year-round in all weather. Facilities include indoor and outdoor pools, two water slides, private spas, and an adults-only pool. There is also a heated outdoor pool with a beach-like area. Individual facilities may change. If a particular offering matters to you, confirm it before your visit.
Within the wider thermal bathing area, Kaipātiki Ora is open. It has cedar thermal pools, steam saunas, ice plunge pools, and private dry changing areas. Alongside the swimming pools and slides, the thermal bathing area therefore also includes saunas and cold plunge pools as separate features.
Kaipātiki Hot Springs offers rental options for birthday parties, whānau gatherings, school trips, club visits, community events, and corporate outings. If you are planning a group visit, confirm the booking arrangements in advance, as they may change. These options provide a specific framework for different occasions; they do not indicate what other offerings may be combined with a group booking.
Skydiving and the airfield
West Auckland Airport is in Parakai and is an all-weather airport with a paved runway. It is suitable for many kinds of aviation activities. Skydive Auckland offers New Zealand’s highest tandem skydive there, from 18,000 feet. This makes skydiving a very different attraction from visiting the thermal pools.
Another altitude is important for the views: in clear conditions, the view from 10,000 feet stretches from Whangārei to Mount Ruapehu and Mount Taranaki. Long-distance visibility is explicitly dependent on clear conditions. The 18,000 feet refers to the height of the tandem skydive; the views are associated with 10,000 feet.
The area’s history is also linked to this activity: commercial skydiving has played a significant role at West Auckland Parakai for 50 years.
Kaipātiki on the Kaipara River
Kaipātiki is also known as Parakai Recreation Reserve and is the location of Kaipātiki Hot Springs. The area lies right beside the Kaipara River. Kaipātiki also provides access to the thermal springs in the settlement of Parakai. So the pools do not stand alone: the location combines the thermal bathing area with a riverside reserve.
Which attraction suits your trip?
For trip planning, it helps to distinguish between the conditions: swimming is available year-round in all weather, while far-reaching views require clear conditions. If you are weighing up thermal bathing and skydiving, you can consider your preferred attraction separately from the conditions relevant to it.
