Discover Warkworth
Accommodation in Warkworth
Warkworth offers several distinct reasons to visit. Its landscapes, architecture and museum appeal to different interests, while the locations vary between the town centre and Parry Kauri Park. If you’re looking for a hotel in Warkworth, you can start by considering whether nature, architectural history or local collections are most important to your trip.
River landscape and kauri trees
Puhinui Falls are on the upper reaches of the Mahurangi River in the centre of Warkworth. They are wāhi tapu and significant to Ngāti Manuhiri. Their riverside location and cultural connection go hand in hand, giving the falls a different focus from the trees in Parry Kauri Park. There, you can see several kauri trees from a walkable viewing platform. This brings two specific natural features together: the upper reaches of the Mahurangi River, with its culturally significant falls, and the kauri trees you can view from the platform.
Architecture in the town centre
Warkworth Town Hall stands in the southern part of the town centre, beside Neville Street. This is a major access road between the central business district and State Highway 1. Town Hall is a rare example of ceramic hollow-block construction in Australasia and also represents the use of glazed hollow-block construction for entire buildings in Australasia and beyond. The construction method itself is therefore a distinctive feature of the building. Along with its location, it provides a specific point of reference if you’d like to explore Warkworth’s architecture and local history.
Museum and local history
Warkworth District Museum presents Warkworth’s rich heritage through its collections and exhibits. It is located in Parry Kauri Park, on the edge of the historic Warkworth community. Indoor exhibits include an old classroom, a general store, a blacksmith’s workshop and “the murderhouse”. The exhibits thus range from education and trade to craft; “the murderhouse” is also part of this insight into the local heritage.
The museum complex also includes Warkworth’s 1912 jail and two army huts. During the Second World War, these were used by Americans stationed in Warkworth. The two stories highlight different periods: the jail is dated to 1912, while the huts are linked to their use during the war. In the complex, you’ll find both a dated building and a story about the presence of Americans stationed there at the time.
The museum’s archive is available for research and genealogy by prior appointment. Arrange your appointment before your visit.
Plan your stay around your interests
When choosing a hotel in Warkworth, you can match your priorities to the locations: Puhinui Falls and Town Hall are in the town centre, while the kauri trees and museum are associated with Parry Kauri Park. If a specific hotel listing gives its location, check whether it suits the places you plan to focus on. This can help you tailor your search to your particular interest in river landscapes, architecture or museum collections.
