Accommodation in Kawerau
Discover Kawerau by interest
Local highlights include walking trails, river scenery, golf, an aquatic centre and local history; nearby, you can also visit the Tarawera Falls Track and access the falls. First, you can consider whether you would like to spend more time in town, by the river or on an outing.
River scenery, walking trails and sport
Near Kawerau, the Tarawera River flows at the foot of Putauaki through a scenic reserve. Gardens and reserves near town are well suited to weekend walks. The short Stoneham Walk winds through Kawerau’s gardens and parks. Other walking trails pass through native bush and forest, offering views of the Tarawera River. Each route showcases different scenery: parkland on the Stoneham Walk, and native forest and river views along the walking trails.
Those interested in white-water sports will find a purpose-built white-water slalom course in Kawerau. It has a viewing platform and an electronic timing system. The town’s competition history is also linked to the sport: Kawerau hosted the 2013 World Rafting Champs.
Another option is the Kawerau Golf Course beside the Tarawera River. The flat, easy-to-walk course has 18 holes and is rated par 71. The setting includes mountain views and numerous birds. If you are planning a round, check the current visitor arrangements before you play.
Swimming and fishing
The Maurie Kjar Aquatic Centre is in the centre of Kawerau, opposite the Kawerau isite. The heated aquatic centre is free and includes a spa, a paddling pool and a jumping pillow. This is a different kind of visit from an outing to the river: the focus here is on the aquatic centre’s facilities. Check current operating conditions before your visit.
Ruruanga Stream, a fishing spot for children under 14 where trout can be caught, is located at Stoneham Walk. If you are planning to fish, check the applicable rules and permits locally. This ensures the age limit and requirements for using the waterway are part of your plans.
Local history and a visit to Tarawera Falls
The Sir James Fletcher Kawerau Museum is located in the Kawerau District Library at Jellicoe Court. It preserves and displays a wide range of materials on Kawerau’s history. The museum complements the nature and sport attractions with a look at local history. Check visiting hours in advance.
Nearby, the Tarawera Falls Track follows the Tarawera River upstream to a viewpoint at the falls. Information panels explain the cultural and natural significance of the area. Access to the car park is from Kawerau via private forestry roads, and a permit is required. Permits to access Tarawera Falls are available from the Kawerau isite Visitor Information Centre on Plunket Street. Check permit and access conditions, as well as the condition of the forestry roads, before setting off.
