In central Christchurch, the Christchurch Botanic Gardens provide a peaceful retreat. Their collections include native and exotic plant species. Nearby, larger park areas, themed gardens and cultural venues offer distinct focal points for planning a trip.

Gardens and green spaces

Hagley Park covers 165 hectares, with extensive open spaces and mature woodlands. Its two perimeter paths offer a clear comparison of distances: the path in North Hagley Park is 4.5 kilometres long, while the one in South Hagley Park is 3.7 kilometres long. Both are suitable for walking and cycling. This lets you distinguish between the park paths by their length and the part of the park they are in, without needing to estimate a walking time.

Mona Vale offers different botanical highlights. There you will find rose and iris gardens, colour-themed beds, and woodland-style plantings along the river. The variety ranges from the native and exotic plant collections of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens to the clearly defined garden themes at Mona Vale.

Architecture and local history

Christchurch Town Hall is in the centre of Christchurch, immediately north of the Victoria Square precinct, and is fully integrated into its riverside setting. The events and cultural complex is designed in the Brutalist style; its auditorium is recognised internationally for its acoustic significance. Its architecture and acoustics give the venue a cultural focus distinct from the gardens and park areas.

Quake City tells the stories of the earthquakes that shook the region in 2010 and 2011. This brings a specific chapter of regional history alongside the architecture of the Town Hall: here, the focus is on the earthquakes; there, it is on the building’s design and the auditorium’s acoustics.

Coast, paths and further points of reference

Christchurch’s coast also has its own distinctive landscape character, providing habitats for wildlife and specialised coastal plants. The New Brighton Pier is 300 metres long and adds a built feature to the coastal setting.

In Akaroa on Banks Peninsula, Stanley Park is a recreational reserve with open grassy areas and naturally regenerating kanuka forest. The park has informal walking tracks, and its open grassy areas offer harbour views. This combination differs from the plant collections and landscaped beds of the gardens.

The ilex Cafe is also located in the visitor centre at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. It offers a relaxed dining experience with locally sourced ingredients. As operating details may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before visiting.

Canterbury in a wider context

Canterbury is the wider travel destination, stretching from the Pacific coast in the east to the Southern Alps in the west. Other landscape highlights include the Canterbury Plains; rivers and mountains offer opportunities for outdoor adventures. This regional perspective covers a different scale from the individual gardens, parks and cultural venues in Christchurch.

One example in Canterbury is the Kura Tāwhiti Access Track. It begins at the Castle Hill/Kura Tāwhiti car park in the Waimakariri Basin and passes through a culturally and ecologically significant landscape known for its towering limestone formations. Kura Tāwhiti is a place of particular significance to Ngāi Tahu and Ngāi Tƫāhuriri. No booking is required for the track.
