If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay in Foxton, the town’s attractions offer a helpful guide to planning your trip: the focus here is on cultural history, technology, riverside trails and Dutch cuisine. You can plan your stay around whether you’d like to visit museums, explore on foot or discover local specialities.

Culture and history in Foxton

Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom offers museums and exhibitions about the stories of Te Awahou–Foxton and people with connections to the area. The Foxton Community Hub has a different focus: it is a local centre for heritage and the natural environment, as well as a meeting place for visitors and the community. It offers visitors insights into Te Awahou–Foxton and its people.

The Te Awahou Riverside Cultural Park is home to the Whare-Manaaki workshop, which showcases traditional Māori art, and the Flax Stripper Museum. These places bring Foxton’s cultural history to life: the workshop is dedicated to art, while the museum offers a unique insight into flax processing.

Technological history at MAVtech

MAVtech is an audio and video technology museum in Foxton. Its extensive collection includes radios, cameras, film and projection equipment, recorded sound and phonographs. It spans everything from imaging technology to sound recording. If you’re particularly interested in historic media and the devices used to create it, the collection offers a distinct focus alongside the town’s cultural history attractions.

At a MAVtech Opening Day, the collection is demonstrated and classic short films are screened in the cinema. If you’d like to experience this programme, check the event dates in advance.

De Molen and Dutch cuisine

Stoneground flour is milled on site at De Molen and offered for sale. Café De Molen serves Dutch dishes and specialities, while the Dutch Deli sells artisan cheeses. So you can find both food to enjoy on site and products to take away in one place. If a particular dish or product is important to your visit, check the current offerings, as menu details and product availability may change.

Riverside walks and trails

Foxton’s trails vary in length and route. The Foxton Historic Walk is an easy 2.55-kilometre walk. It starts on Duncan Street; from there, follow the signs to the information points. The Foxton Town River Loop Amble is shorter, at 2.12 kilometres. The route starts at the war memorial and runs along Main Street, Clyde Street and Harbour Street to Seaview Gardens. The Te Awahou Board Walk is 670 metres long and passes through the distinctive plant life along the riverbank.

The Piriharakeke Walkway also links landscape and local history: from the walkway, you can see the ManawatĆ« River loop and farmland, while historic signs and photographs tell the story of the area. The River Loop Amble & Flax Walkway follows a grassy path along the banks of the ManawatĆ« River. To the north, it connects the Te Awahou Board Walk with the Flax Walk and the start of the Piriharakeke Track to the south. Along the way, you can explore Foxton’s history and culture. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Plan your journey

Foxton is on State Highway 1, and public transport from major city centres is also an option. As timetables and services can change, check current connections before travelling. This will help you factor the journey into your choice of destination, then decide whether cultural attractions, technological history, cuisine or riverside trails will shape your stay.
